So this weeks discussion I thought was very intriguing in getting me to think about things from another angle. The artifact that I chose to talk about is the song “Magic Shop” by Korean Pop group, BTS, on their album “Love Yourself”. Over the past few years Korean Pop, or what many refer to as “K-Pop”, has been one of the biggest crazes out there. The Korean culture is very artistic and generating many enthusiasts all over the world. Their music and even some of their television shows like Squid Game has created a worldwide phenomenon. As much as South Korea has vaulted into the 21 century they still have a tight hold on to their past and cultural heritage. The Commisceo Global website (n.d.) talks about the importance of the Korean family and how it is an “integral part of customs and life in South Korea.” It is also custom for the eldest son to be the one to take care of his parents when they cannot take care of themselves. When you enter into a Korean home you will always take your shoes off out of courtesy. Dining and food is a way of building relationships, where pleasure and business constantly overlap (Hello, n.d.).
Somethings that people may not know is that families got separated when the Korean peninsula split between north and south during the Korean War back in 1953. Unfortunately, these families will not be able to see each other until there is an actual peace treaty in place. Currently, both sides have an armistice agreement that initiated a cease-fire, and that has been the case ever since. Another stereotype that is a sensitive subject to most Koreans is the consumption of dog meat. It is something they are not proud of, but it is thing. They have moved in the direction of ruling on killing dogs for meat to be considered illegal so eventually this practice will be abolished. Lastly, about one-fifth the population shares the last name Kim, which used to be a royal name (3 Reasons, 2021). The ONLYOU website explains that all “Kims” are not related, and for some time this created issues when it came time for legalizing marriages. There was public backlash on whether two people with the same last name could marry (3 Reasons, 2021).
