1. Create process maps for the “before” and “after” order management processes. Use Figure 8.15 as a guide. Start from when the consumer places the order and end when the shipment is made.
Before:
· Customer places order and is received
· OMS Inventory Check
· In stock, if no backorder/customer notified, if yes move to 4
· Order transferred to WMS/picked
· WMS transfers to TMS for shipment
· Customer notified of shipment
After:
· Customer places order and is received
· OMS Inventory Check – should be real time so customer knows availability
· Customer selects delivery date – TMS calculates days to delivery in real time
· Order transferred to WMS/picked
· WMS transfers to TMS for shipment on selected date
· Customer notified of shipment on selected date

· Prepare/ Place Order
· Order placed online.
· Receive Enter & Validate Order
· Notification of order received
· Receive Inventory/ Order management system (OMS)
· Check availability of item in inventory
· If not on-hand customer receives back order status
· If available, OMS would send order to Warehouse Management System
· Determine Delivery Date/ Warehouse Management System (WMS)
· Picked order in which they were received
· Consolidate Order
· Plan and build loads
· Route shipments
· Transportation Management System (TMS)
· Select Carriers and Rate shipments
· Receive items Schedules for shipment
· Load Vehicle and Generate Shipping Docs
· Ship Product for delivery to customer
· Shipped customer receives notice of shipment
After:
· Order placed against a known stock item with the delivery date selected.
· TMS determines ship date.
· WMS determines required pick time.
· Product is picked at a determined time.
· Product is shipped.
· Shipping notice sent to the customer.
