Question:
At the end of the story, Dee tells Maggie, “It’s really a new day for us. But from the way you and Mama still live you’d never know it.” What does Dee mean? And how do Maggie and Mama respond?
Classmate’s response:
Dee told Maggie, "It's really a new day for us. But from the way you and Mama still live, you'd never know it". She meant that Maggie and mama still live traditionally. They aren't wrapped up in modern society. They are old fashioned and see only family values. Maggie truly smiled because she loved how evolved her sister was.
The family fought over the quilts because they were symbolic. The quilts symbolized tradition. They were passed down through the family. The family is pretty much old fashioned so old family quilts are like diamonds to them.
