Module-to-Text
Modules 9-12 present the discrimination and stereotype towards certain groups of people. The stereotype and discrimination towards women in module 11 remind me the play that I read last quarter, Trifles
.
Trifles is an one act play written by Susan Glaspell, and it depicts a story about the murder of Ms. Wright done by Mrs. Wright. Throughout the play, three men keep ignoring the evidence discovered by the women and mention that their findings are trifles. Moreover, when the men are investigating kitchen, they blame Mrs. Wright for not cleaning the sink since they think it is women’s responsibility to stay home and take care of the house chore. However, it turns out that the evidence found by the women is the most important clue because they can better understand the motivation of Mrs. Wright. In the end, the women decide not to reveal the truth since they discover that Mrs. Wright is abused by her husband. Furthermore, since women do not have the right to vote or serve in the jury at that time, the two women in the play find other ways to judge their peer. Although women have the right to vote and serve in the jury nowadays, their definition of beauty and value are often judged by men, sometimes, they are even objectified in the advertisements. Therefore, women should define their value, and the society should stop creating advertisements containing stereotypes towards women.
Module-to-Self
In Taiwan, there are 16 tribes of aborigines, but when my ancestor, the Han people, came to Taiwan, they claimed the aborigines’ land and treated them badly since they thought they were superior to those aborigines. I have even heard that the aborigines were hunted as animals and eaten by Han people. Nowadays, our government wants to preserve their cultures, but it is too late since a lot of the aborigines’ children cannot speak their mother tongue. The aborigines are now minorities, and their cultures are dying due to the oppression of the Han people.
Module-to-World
The civil right movement in module 10 reminds me the news that the US Navy intends to name ship after Harvey Milk, a gay right activist. I think this shows we are now in a society that is friendlier to those minorities. In the past, homosexual acts were criminal offenses in the United Kingdom, and the homosexual people would be imprisoned or forced to undergo hormonal treatment. For example, the great computer scientist, Alan Turing, was forced to undergo hormonal treatment after he was convicted guilty for being a gay. Fortunately, the homosexual marriage has been legalized now and the society is more acceptable towards homosexual people.
