Running head: RESOURCE LEVELING

RESOURCE LEVELING

Discussion 12

Resource leveling is one of the concepts from the readings of chapter 12 that I noted was very important in the whole area of project management and resource allocation in particular. This particularly focuses on the way the resources have been allocated such as on the activities and certain tasks in a project and finds a way to reduce elements of over-allocation that might affect the efficacy of the project. Resource leveling also looks at some of the activities that may have been under-allocated may be due to inadequacies during the scheduling of projects or during the budget estimation process that was used to determine what resources to be used for the projects.

The concept of resource leveling seeks to also address some of the challenges and constraints that may be met during the implementation of a project. Some of the challenges that resource leveling seeks to ensure are handled include ensuring that any of the required resources are made available during the optimum period so that the transition from the activities among themselves for the projects can be efficient with effective resource use. According to (Atan, & Eren, 2018), "optimal resource allocation is one of the principles that informed the need for resource-leveling".

I felt this concept was important because it can affect the trajectory of any project such as whether there are no delays due to the misuses of the allocated resources and challenges during the transition from one task to the next. Resource leveling is very effective even for those activities that may be considered to be critical to the success of a project. This, therefore, gives a lot of control to the project manager or the individual in charge of certain activities to have a clear way to control the flow of events in a project with the correct strategies in place to ensure there is support from the needed resources.

There are many ways through which I can make use of resource leveling in projects or in whatever task I may have been given custody over. One of them is in ensuring the resources that I have been given for a certain task or initiative are used effectively and to the maximum so that they can give the value. This will help in making sure the resources are allocated well and avoid any wastage of the resources that are an inadequate commodity in any enterprise or organization. One of the ways I will also use this concept in any task is to ensure that challenges of fluctuation in the way the resources might be utilized in projects do not become a task that overwhelms me.

Resource leveling is also very important to project management because it puts in place the necessary basis upon which there can be a framework where the resources are used in an optimum manner. Many techniques can be used to ensure that there is a direct improvement in the control of the aspects of a project where resource leveling has been used. It bridges the gap between what might have been an allocated resource and the resources that are available during the implementation phase. (Ponz-Tienda, Salcedo-Bernal, Pellicer, & Benlloch-Marco, 2017) noted that "while there are a few issues that need to be addressed for the process of resource leveling such as in creating delays between project activities, it is a good idea for enterprises".
