Over the past five years to 2019, the Office Supply Stores industry has encountered hard circumstances. Due to the evolving digital landscape and fierce external competition, traditional office supply shops have long been under pressure. The evolving nature of how information is distributed has resulted in lower demand for many of the key goods of the industry. Amazon represent grand part of the competitions for any Office Supply store industry, according to IbisWorld (2019), “as a result, industry revenue is forecast to decline 2.3% of 2019 alone.” (par. 1).
In Amazon's era, Office Depot uses its 1,400 retail shops and more than 50,000 employees to concentrate on higher-margin services, focusing on business catering providing customer-facing services such as copying and IT support for a long time; the retail division of the company saw revenue from services rise by 11 percent making Office Depot realize that its sweet spot is customized business services (Bhattacharyya, 2018). In addition to basic technology and office equipment, the firm is positioned as a one-stop store for companies seeking advice, including coaching services that cover business strategy, marketing and staffing (Bhattacharyya, 2018).
According to IVM (2018), “retailers, such as Staples and Office Depot, which has more than 2,500 stores around the world, use online portals to give people instant access to order their supplies. Others use mobile-based applications and social media to encourage more people to buy more of their products. “(par. 3), Office Depot has become a major integrated distribution company, serving primarily business with a complete range of services and equipment, goods and technology solutions, mainly through its B2B platform. Office Depot also has a distinguishing supply chain that can deliver the next day to the entire country and do so straight from the desktop. According Kovar (2019), “in the second fiscal quarter of 2019, B2B business generated over 60 percent of Office Depot's total revenue, and at the divisional level drove over 90 percent of its operating income.” (par. 5).
