The category I’ve chosen is students facing challenges with effects from trauma.  As a place to study and develop, school may also serve as a haven for certain students who have been abused.  There is a very good chance that there is a student in every classroom that has experienced a traumatizing experience.  Some of these traumatic experiences could be sexual assault, physical assault, or witnessing or being involved in domestic violence.  Unfortunately, these issues may be induced by a an individual that is supposed to be the ones to protect them.  For some students, school is the only place where they feel secure and can build long-term connections with others they can trust.  One thing that is an issue is that the trauma may have long-term consequences for certain children, culminating in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms (Frieze, 2015).  Trauma has been shown to have a detrimental impact on the students' ability to learn and their behavior, which leads to a significant impact on a student's ability to learn.  Stephanie Frieze (2015) states “that exposure to violence specifically has a negative impact on reading achievement”.  Even though teachers are not mental health professionals, being informed and educated on trauma can lead to therapeutic approaches that can be incorporated into the classroom to help students who have experienced trauma (Frieze, 2015).  This can help to address the delayed development, underdeveloped neural pathways, and over-regulated nervous systems that they have experienced as a result of their experiences (Frieze, 2015).  By incorporating these students that have experienced traumas into the classroom can be that place they feel safe which can help get these students the help they need.
