Identify a major barrier that is personal or that may be present in your desired area of practice with consideration to information technology, communication, or patient care. (SLO 7.1, CO 1)
With consideration to collaborative practice, discuss how a DNP prepared nurse might overcome this barrier to practice. (SLO 7.1, CO 1)
The common barriers to nursing practice include lack of independent practice and limited prescriptive authority. Nevertheless, the challenge to implement technology in nursing is becoming a personal issue for most NPs. Today, the potential for ICT (Information and Communication Technology) implementation is increasing to improve the quality of the nursing outcome. Technology plays an integral role in nursing practice and education, but nurse practitioners are presented with barriers relating to nursing informatics. The integration of information science and technology to support nursing practice is crucial at all levels of nursing (Lee, 2018). Notably, nursing technology and informatics competency are hindered by a lack of adequate training as it requires computer skills and informatics skills and knowledge. Computer skills are essential in the use of telecommunication devices to enhance nursing care and document patient care. Information literacy skills effectively improve health care outcomes by improving performance and efficiency through new technologies. DNP-educated nurses can overcome this barrier to practice by attaining education and computer skills integral to information technology. Limited knowledge in IT is the leading barrier in the implementation of technology. Compared to other health providers, nurses have the most communication with individual patients, and it means that they can interact with IT more frequently. Other barriers to IT adoption in nursing practice include lack of interest, lack of time to implement IT, inadequate time to learn, inadequate resources, lack of technical support by the administration, and age. The use of technology may create a positive attitude toward nursing productivity, and they should be engaged in the initial design of health systems to enhance health care quality (Paaske et al., 2017). For effective implementation of health care technology systems, nurses have to be knowledgeable about computer skills, information technology, and informatics skills. For instance, in telenursing, the significance of accessibility to health systems, transparency, confidentiality, information updates, standards, and accountability need to be considered.
