An annual review includes assessing the organizations progress in achieving its vision and goals. The annual update made adjustments to ensure the relevance of goals based on the pace and amount of progress made in light of the changes in markets, regulations, and the industry (Harris, 2018). To conduct an annual review or update, organizations must first conduct a preliminary assessment to gauge the progress to date, degree of change, and relevance of plan elements (Harris, 2018). When reviewing and updating, the correct documentation is key to the entire process, as they may be necessary for approval and modification. Everyone involved in the strategic plan must be aware of all of the factors that go into success reviewing and updating any information. Leaders must be well prepared, have effective communication and expectations, management must be on board, and there must be sufficient context to solidify the success and efficiency of the review (Harris, 2018). Each organization may conduct a different process, one that works for that company. Some organizations perform informal abbreviations, formal and somewhat abbreviated processes, or formal and lengthy update processes.
Implementing a strategic plan in an organization can be challenging and cause high failure rates due to loss of energy and focus, lack of management, disconnect from operations, and a lack of resources. The strategic planning process requires a great deal of attention and effort from leadership not only during the planning process but also during the implementation stages. It requires managers to be hands on and manage the direction and oversee the process. Many leaders tend to believe that the implementation phase does not require much attention, so the failure rate becomes very high in this case (Harris, 2018). The strategic plan becomes inconsistent in its progress due to employees believing the plan is just and add-on to their daily operations rather than an ongoing process. Lack of resources is also a key reasoning for implementation failure because many strategic plans are unrealistic, and the organization does not have the appropriate resources to make these goals come into fruition.
