MGMT DISC2
DQ8: Do Sleepy Shift Workers Need Cephalon’s Pick-Me-Up Pill?
Should employers consider providing Nuvigil to their shift workers?
No, employers should not have any reason to hand medication to their employees. Some medical professionals and employers cannot determine a person who require actual treatment but I can only image the liability that handing out drugs would place on an employer.
What are the ethical implications of producing such a drug?
Ethically, the company manufacturing the drug is lucky because someone came up with a ‘condition’ in order to over prescribe their drug. Many people are working multiple jobs or strange hours that can develop something known as schedule instead of depending on the newest form of drug made to keep you awake. The only ‘legal’ drug that could assist you focus and also kept you awake was aderol, and it was not something that was difficult to obtain a prescription for. The list of side effects accompanying this drug is astonishing. Image taking something that is so life threatening in order to stay awake.
Are there ethical issues facing the employer? The employee? If so, please explain.
In my personal opinion, encouraging employees to use medically-approved stimulus enhancing drugs is not ethical. These drugs causes more long term harm in the body. If I was an employer who was allowing this because I needed the best performance out of my employees, I would take a step back and think about the long term consequences. Most of these drugs like Nuvigil have many side effects. There is more health care down the road. I can see that having one productive employee who can stay awake is better than hiring two to perform the same job one could do. I do not think that using prescription drug is not an ethical method. As an employee I think you should do anything possible to enhance yourself if that is your personal choice but I do not think it is fair for them to feel pressure or have a drug or diseases of this nature presented to them in workplace.
