ARTS 1A: Discussion 6

Robert Campin The Mérode Altarpiece, 1427-1432 Oil on wood

Maya Lin Vietnam Veterans Memorial, dedicated 1982 Black granite

For our discussion we will consider how to carefully use the word “expression” when interpreting works of art. And we will consider why it might be appropriate to avoid using this word. The methods of iconology, iconography, and semiotics require that we consider the significance of the written sources, symbols, and signs that help artists, patrons, and viewers find art meaningful. None of these methods of interpretation have anything to do with “expression,” yet students usually assume that all works of art should be understood in relation to the “expression” of the artist. Let’s change that.

Address any of the following questions in your discussion post: 1. Consider The Mérode Altarpiece by Robert Campin. This is an altarpiece produced for a

family to use for devotional purposes, privately in their home. Specifically, it was designed to help Catholics pray. List everything you can think of that the artist had to know in order to make it—aspects of creating art which do not include the artist’s “feelings.”

2. Individual members of the family who commissioned The Mérode Altarpiece very likely felt something when looking at this work, especially religious devotion. But did Campin himself have to “feel” or “express” religious devotion to be able to make this work?

3. Maya Lin produced the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial by choice, through entering and winning a competition. But the work ultimately belongs to American citizens. What is more important—the feelings that Maya Lin poured into the design of this work, or the emotion experienced by veterans who visit the monument?

4. Aside from emotion, what was required of Maya Lin to design the Vietnam Veterans Memorial?
