ANSWER THIS DISCUSSION:
The article that I chose for this discussion is one that is of great interest to me because it pertains exactly to my area of practice in the emergency department. The article of my choosing touches on triage in the emergency department and prevention of long hospital waits, decrease in mortality rates, and higher patient satisfaction. According to Corkey,N et al,“senior emergency doctors in triage alongside the triage nurse allows for more timely decision making and appropriate investigation orders. Early bed requesting or referral to specialist consultation were also found to improve waiting times.”(Corkey,N et al.) Direct collaboration between the emergency department team improves the way that the emergency department flow is, and improves not only patient satisfaction but improves quality of work from all interdisciplinary teams. I started my search for this article using the Walden University library database search ( Walden University Library, n.d) and proceeding to use CINAHL plus with full text via EBSCO host search engine. I had prior experience with this search database during the completion of my BSN and found it to personally work best for me, although many other research search databases such as PUBMED and MEDLINE are also great resources, sometimes when a student gets accustomed to one engine it becomes easier to work with. I proceeded to input the search words “ Emergency medicine and triage”, narrowed it down to the English language and last five years, and then proceeded to check off peer reviewed journal articles only because as per Walden University Library “ Much of the scholarly research published today is published as journal articles” ( Walden University Library, n.d). I believe that as Nurses Journals are easier to access than any other research articles, whether they are online or in print.
I did not experience as much difficulty as I thought I would simply because I believe I had prior experience with search engines while completing my BSN. I do however, see how this may be a bit challenging to someone who has never worked with a research engine. The narrowing down of what it is you want exactly in an article can be a bit tricky. I remember during my BSN degree the articles that I would choose would all be older than five years and I always struggled with choosing a more up to date article. I definitely believe that this particular database would be useful to my colleagues is because emergency medicine is a broad but in a sense very narrow field. Certain search words such as ‘triage” or “discharge instructions” can really narrow a search in conjunction with typing in “emergency room “ in the search field. I would highly recommend this database because it seems to be perfect if you need to narrow a search down. It gives you options to check off such as “ first author is a Nurse”, “Evidence-based practice”, “Publication types” , Age Groups” etc. So for a very narrow search this website would be ideal because it allows you focus on what exactly you want to search for. One part of research is finding the appropriate filters to apply but the second portion of it is finding the article and actual publication that you need to focus on for whatever it is you are doing research for, an assignment or a work related search.
