DISCUSSION (ONE AND TWO)
The Arthritis Campaign Example
This week, we will be focusing on an outreach to several diverse groups for people living with arthritis. This will be a more in-depth and longer discussion, as we are doing a deeper-level examination of a set of campaigns. Before we dig into this weeks’ assigned materials, let’s reflect together on the following question based on what you have learned so far this term.
1- In your opinion, is web-based communication on health issues a viable approach to improving healthcare communication messaging? Are there groups who may not benefit from, or be able to access, web-based information? How so?
Now that you have read the campaigns and completed your assigned readings, let’s apply what we have learned (and of course our experiences!) to assess how effective this campaign can be for people from African American, Caucasian, and Latino cultural backgrounds.
1- Thinking about all that you have learned to date, what are key features of this campaign that can promote success in its goals for people living with arthritis? What might you want to replicate for your organization?
2- How effective do you feel that the campaigns are for the target groups? Are there areas that you feel are disconnected from the realities of life for one or more of these groups or strategies you feel should be adapted to best meet the cultural norms and values of one or more of these groups? How so?
3-Let’s focus on the Spanish-speaking population. Imagine that you want to get some media coverage for your campaign, in order to boost visibility and sustainability. Share a plan for how you would do this? As you discuss your plans with one another, consider how this might look different if you were trying to get media coverage for the campaign in a predominantly African American community or a primarily Caucasian community?
Post your primary response. Read any postings already provided by your instructor or fellow students. Read and respond to the conclusions drawn by at least two of your classmates. Remember to read the feedback to your own major postings and reply to it throughout the module.
