Before you do your initial post, please review this sample outline:Outline for Cinderella with Secondary Sources.doc
Please make sure you post the initial response by Tuesday of Week 5. Here are the instructions for the initial discussion post:
Using the sample outline as a model, outline Chilcoat’s article. Please note that the italicized first paragraph is not actually her article but her abstract, which provides an overview of the actual article. Please also note that you will not be outlining the article paragraph by paragraph (that would take forever!) but rather point by point (for example, she might take 4 paragraphs to make one point, but you don’t need to outline each of these paragraphs). Make sure that you include:
The thesis (there is actually an explicit thesis statement in her article (not the abstract) that can simply be quoted).
At least three points (there are more than 3, but you don’t need to do more than 3) that she makes in support of her thesis (these can be paraphrased).
Primary source illustrations (examples from movies) that she uses to illustrate the points you’ve chosen (these can be paraphrased).
Secondary source illustrations (examples from brain sex researchers, feminist scholars, etc.) that she uses to illustrate the points you’ve chosen (these can be paraphrased or quoted, but be sure to provide in-text citations). Note that Chilcoat uses her secondary sources both to support her argument (Judith Butler, for example) but also to set up opposing arguments (E.O. Wilson for example) that she then counters. This strategy of using secondary sources to set up opposing arguments is one that you can also use in your essay.
Note that in your outline, you do not need to include the secondary sources that Chilcoat uses in her introduction or conclusion, but these are good things to be aware of. In fact, the objective of this discussion post is to think consciously about how to structure a synthesis analysis essay with multiple primary and secondary sources. As such, Chilcoat’s article is an excellent model for Essay Two as well as your Final Research Paper.
In addition, please reply to 2 other posts by Thursday of Week 5 with at least 4 sentences for each post. Note that you won't be able to see other posts until you make your own initial post! Some options for replies: discuss what new insights you gained from the post, connections to your own post, or alternative ideas. Please also keep in mind the reading about "Debate and Dialogue" as you write your replies and try to reply in the spirit of dialogue rather than debate.
