Community activism

Community activism entails groups, organizations, and individuals collaborating to bring radical and specific changes in environmental, cultural, economic and social practices and policies. Six concepts exist in community activism namely community, social justice, conscious raising, critical reflection praxis and empowerment (Messias, 2019). Community infers to the involvement of groups or individuals that are directly affected by issues that are the emphasis of change such as education, which attracts attention to activism. An example of Social justice is the equitable distribution of resources, and the concept entails public health, political and philosophical concepts. Consciousness Raising, Praxis, and Critical Reflection are interconnected, and the concepts are responsible for engaging individuals in activist initiatives that increase public awareness in specific issues and the root causes associated. The concept of empowerment is multilevel and integrates outcomes and processes of social action where communities, organizations, families, organizations, and individuals to master and have control within political, economic, and social contexts for more equity.

One way that advanced practice nurses can engage in community activism to limit further negative health impacts from Big Tobacco in their respective health communities is through advocacy in the legislative arena.  Maryland  and  Gonzalez  (2012) claim that nurses providing information to legislators can be significantly rewarding and influential. During advocacy the nurse can provide accurate information regarding the impact of tobacco in the community to the legislators that can use it to recommend policies. The policies can be implemented to limit the spread of tobacco products. Such activism is not only beneficial to the community but to the nurses that are advocating. Dwyer, Chang, Hannay, and Algoe (2019) assert that involvement in political activism can enhance wellbeing. Nurses can have better outcomes on their well-being.

Participants of activism against tobacco control are mostly health care providers ranging from Doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, even insurance companies. The target of activism is directed towards the prevention of emphysema, lung cancer, heart disease, and other medical conditions related to tobacco usage.

A significant statistic, used often by tobacco control advocates, is that the number of deaths from tobacco use in the United States is greater than the number of deaths from alcohol use, motor vehicle accidents, suicides, AIDS, homicides, illegal drugs, and fires combined (Lynch and Bonnie, 2014). The dyer affects of tobacco use is not limited to the United States. According to studies by the World Health Organization, in 1990 an estimated three million deaths throughout the globe, or six percent of all deaths were attributable to tobacco use (Murray and Lopez, 2016).

It is public record that Blue Cross Blue shield as well as many other health insurance companies sued the tobacco industry as they are the main cause of many of the diseases insurance companies disperse coverage to. This is how the sales tax on many tobacco products were inforced, causing prices to go up for users. As mentioned, the power and influence by those of us in the medical field greatly influence the outcome of our patients by voicing our knowlege of the disparities tobacco products cause. Nurses can take part in activism by being involved with campaigns and local government policies voting for and enforcing stricter rules limiting tobacco consumption and preventing chronic disease by doing so.

Discussion 9

Social justice should be viewed as one of the fundamental aspects of community activism, and its central objective is to eliminate inequalities and protect human rights (Hilfinger Messias & Estrada, 2015). The focus on economic matters is particularly important from the perspective of social justice because many individuals have limited access to care due to the increasing costs of healthcare services (Maryland & Gonzalez, 2012). The role of empowerment also should not be overlooked, and it is the responsibility of nurses to establish the structures that improve the ability of local communities to influence politics and promote equality. Consciousness raising is another core element of community activism, and it is based on the idea that it is necessary to improve public awareness to address healthcare issues (Hilfinger Messias & Estrada, 2015). Community-based work should make it easier for professional nurses to articulate some of the concepts and highlight the impact of healthcare issues. It is difficult to argue with the fact that Big Tobacco has an adverse impact on many communities because the largest companies in the industry focus on lobbying. Advocacy in the legislative area is of utmost importance in such situations, and nurses should provide policymakers with necessary information (Maryland & Gonzalez, 2012). Some of the policymakers may be motivated to address the needs of local communities and introduce new bills that could limit the influence of Big Tobacco. The focus on such areas as the educational system and the healthcare system is also important because nurses are provided with opportunities to facilitate public discussions and change the opinions of other professionals. Nurses that focus on community-based work are more likely to have a profound understanding of the needs of local communities and ensure that their interests are always taken into account. Overall, it is beneficial to address the issue from different perspectives to develop collaborative relationships.

Big Tobacco continues to draw in more people and prohibits current smokers from quitting (Shank, 2018). This is something to be concerned about since a great number of the U.S population and even bigger worldwide are current users. This industry is using more nicotine levels to increase the addiction. An advanced practice nurse is able to recognize how tobacco products are affecting our population since it happens to be a risk factor of many illnesses.

Nurses play a vital role in community activism. That is because nurses have the knowledge, skills, and compassion to be able to advocate for different communities. One of the main concepts of community activism includes advocacy. Advocacy can be used by nurses to be able to speak on behalf of the population (Maryland & Gonzalez, 2012). Nurses can use education to promote better health mechanism and ideas to a targeted population. Research also comes to be a big part of activism as nurses must use it in order to remain informed and educated. That education is then passed on to the targeted population in order to make them aware of the concerning topic. Once the population has gained insight and awareness, nurses can push for better laws to facilitate better outcomes.

Advocacy presented by nurses is part of being empathetic and wanting to protect the patients from further damage (Davoodvand, Abbaszadeh & Ahmadi, 2016). Big tobacco does not seem to have people’s best interests at heart. This is something that nurses as health care professionals can use to continue caring for different populations throughout the United States.

Health Care Policy

Community activism for APNs is an important concept in nursing practice because nurses have been in a distinctive position not only to provide bedside care but to advocate for change inside the community in particular. Preparing professional nurses for community-based practice involving community activism and social engagement requires developing and sustaining a philosophy that supports service learning and community partnerships (Mason, Gardner, Outlaw, Freida & O'Grady, 2016). The principles and services information, community, collaboration, empowerment, and activism are crucial foundations.

Community activism concerning the damaging influences of tobacco use are ideas natural in educationally preparing nurses to satisfy the healthcare requirements of individuals and communities (Stevens, 2014). Many student nurses, however, appear either afraid of or uninterested locally facet of professional nursing practice. You will find however, educational strategy baked into master prepared student nurse which involves a free account of methods to enjoy community engagement to combat big tobacco industries.  For instance, talk at local schools and educate youthful minds concerning the risks of tobacco use.

Community activism is important as it allows nursing practitioners to advocate for certain needs in the community. Without proper advocacy, the basic needs in communities won’t be met, especially in communities where people have middle to low income. Community activism usually pushes for policy transformation which, in turn, leads to better living standards. The key concepts of community activism include achieving social justice, the creation of awareness, and the empowerment of community members (Messias, n.d.). Social justice refers to the fair and equitable sharing of resources in a manner that the whole community will benefit. Through community activism, people can no enjoy clean air, proper housing, and appropriate food security such that they lead a healthy lifestyle. Community activism also helps in creating awareness about certain components in the society. For instance, nurses can educate community members on proper diet and nutrition which when implemented, will lead to better livelihoods.

Community activism is also important for the empowerment of community members. Usually, due to their economic status in the society, some communities don’t understand their rights. This causes discrimination or violation of their rights. Therefore, through community activism, community members get empowered on what policies exist to protect their rights. For instance, community activism can empower youths to stand up for their rights and avoid sexual harassment or being forced to abuse drugs. Empowerment allows communities to understand their rights and thus, adopt development initiatives that will benefit them.

To limit further negative health impacts from Big Tobacco, advanced practice nurses can engage in community activism through various activities such as educating community members on the dangers of excessive consumption of tobacco, and how people can stop tobacco addictions for better health. Since tobacco abuse leads to various health complications such as lung cancer, advanced nurses can advocate for better treatment and healthcare to be provided to patients so that their health improves. This may even mean advocating for subsidizing treatment drugs (Maryland & Gonzalez, 2012).
