As a fire service leader, there are always situations that need personal discipline. Therefore its essential to acknowledge the disciplinary process and its components. Disciplinary concept is a stair- step approach to enforcing organization’s policies and procedures. It enables employees and employers to progress through the stages, escalating the discipline as the infraction escalate. Disciplinary model consists of verbal reprimand, verbal warning, written reprimand, termination and suspension (Ward, 2005).
Being in the department of career, paid-on-call, and volunteer organization, discipline is very essential and its always employed to the latter. Such departments have strict disciplinary policies. When an organizations permits personnel to operate in ways that don’t mirror the company’s set goals, morale and public ultimately impacted.
Majority of the departments in companies consists of paid on-call members under the impression their team should not be disciplined because they participate in the company’s workforce. In addition, facts remains that every organization has rules and regulations that governs it to ensure consistent level of participation is undertaken in an efficient and effective manner. Discipline is considered as a tool employed in regulating behaviors and action that doesn’t coincide with what is expected of the company’s member. The instrument is utilized in the professional growth and development of many companies.
Verbal warning is usually sufficient to curtail all sorts of actions that violate organizations rules and policies. A written reprimand is used in disciplinary process when an employee is given a chance to be counseled and couched in order to achieve desired outcome. Incase organization’s rules and policies are violated, as a result suspension may take place. In addition, if an organization wants to separate certain firefighter from their companies due to violation of rules and regulations, they terminate their workforce from that organization.
