Discussion: Values, Vision, and Mission Statements

Consider the following two mission statements:

• "To nourish the seeds of knowledge already planted within the hearts of the youth, which will grow into a beautiful and thriving tree, shading all cultures of our community, and eventually bear the fruits of a unified people. We believe in working, thinking, and planning to provide a stable and growing club and community."

• "We are Good Samaritans, guided by Catholic tradition and trusted to deliver ideal healthcare experiences."

Are these effective company mission statements? Can you determine the types of organizations that produced them? Having an effective framework with which to define and guide future decisions and behavior is paramount when it comes to strategic planning and marketing. Mission statements provide the organization with direction and guidance. In this discussion you will differentiate between and closely analyze the values, vision, and mission statements of a particular healthcare organization.

By the way, you may be interested to learn that the first mission statement above is from a motorcycle club, Black Out Ryders; the second is from a hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, in Baltimore, Maryland.

To prepare for this Discussion:

• Review this week's Learning Resources.

Research and select a healthcare organization in your area. State the values, vision, and mission statements for your chosen healthcare organization. These should be provided on a website or in person at the facility.

By Day 4

Post a comprehensive response to the following:

• Briefly describe the healthcare organization that you have selected.

• State the healthcare organization's values, vision, and mission statements.

• Explain whether or not the values of the organization are reflected in their vision and mission statements. Justify your answer.

• Recommend changes to the values, vision, and mission statements that you think would improve the healthcare organization's performance. Justify your recommendations.

Support your work with specific citations from this week's Learning Resources and/or additional sources as appropriate. Your citations must be in APA format.
