Disability Justice Assignment

Britney Spears has been under a conservatorship since 2008. This legal guardianship has impacted all parts of her life, including her medication and reproductive health. In this assignment, you will be tasked with considering disability justice as it applies in the case of Britney Spears.

Using the format of your choice (essay, letter, blog post, Instagram post, etc.), explain which of Sins Invalid’s 10 Tenets of Disability Justice are most relevant to the Free Britney movement. Explain how Britney Spears’s conservatorship might (or might not) help us better understand the needs of other disabled people.

In week 2, we learned about Disability Justice and the conservatorship system. You should cite the readings for week 2 for this assignment both in text and in a references page to best support the conversation you are outlining. Optional readings are also provided most weeks, including:

· the New Yorker article which gives a broad outline of Britney’s experiences,

· an NPR recording/transcription about Britney’s forced contraceptives,

· an article about marriage and conservatorships,

· a New York Times article about celebrity sexism, and

· a scholarly article about Britney Spears and sanism

These additional resources are not mandatory but might help you consider Britney’s relationship to other disabled people.

Your assignment will be graded on three aspects:

· Is it clear what Disability Justice is? (cite: Preface to Care Work)

· Is it clear how Disability Justice applies to Britney Spears’s experiences? (cite: Britney Spears’ Conservatorship is a Disability Rights Issue)

· Is it clear how the case of Britney Spears compares to the experiences of other disabled people?

You will also be graded on structure and style, so make sure that your assignment is concise, clear, and easy to read!

Your assignment should be between 500 and 750 words (please do not go over 750 words). Due on Brightspace before 11:59pm on October 15th. No email submissions will be accepted.
