Class,
There are many ways to define an entrepreneur, as there is some controversy over
the meaning of the word (Duermyer, 2017). You could say it is simply a person who
works for themselves, or independently organizes and operates a business, but most
would say that is goes much deeper than that, or perhaps successful entrepreneurs
go deeper.
An entrepreneur is someone who seeks to profitably solve a problem that the
world has, in exchange for enough monetary compensation to achieve their dreams
(Clark, 2017). It is also stated in numerous articles that a true entrepreneur is not just
being out on your own, but also possessing passion and leader qualities, making it
your labor of love (Duermyer, 2017). I would agree, the person needs to have
passion, be a problem solver, and be innovative to stay ahead in their chosen path
of entrepreneurship.
Solid traits of an entrepreneur include characteristics such as self-motivation,
creativity, and being strong-willed. Self-motivation is a no brainer in my opinion, no
one is going to make you start your own business but you. There will not be anyone
supervising you, or pushing you to complete your business plan, this will come from
within yourself. In this day and age, you need to be creative; an innovator. You need
to stand out from the rest, and exercise integrity, accountability, honesty, and other
good business ethic traits to become a successful entrepreneur. You will likely
encounter a few set-backs while getting your business up and running, and those
are to be expected. This is where the weak are separated from the strong, and it
takes a strong-willed person to be a good entrepreneur (Laidre, 2011).
I think that the best possible way to develop the characteristics of an entrepreneur is
through the research an study of successful entrepreneurs. In other words, do your
homework. There are tons of articles, videos, and other various readings on the web,
as well as government sites that offer advise, what works, and does not work. These
resources are endless and at your finger tips. You could also schedule informational
interviews with some local shops, and speak directly to these entrepreneurs in
person.
