In the last module we established that there should be practical limits on what types of medical care should be provided as necessary care and therefore reimbursed to the patient. This week we'll try to determine how to distribute the costs of providing medically necessary healthcare to the public.
Your term as the chief guru of the healthcare system has not ended. In this week's discussion, you will propose how to structure the healthcare financing system.
First read the three articles provided in this module folder. Begin with "A Short History of American Health Insurance". Then consider the opposing positions presented in the other two articles.
Here is the question you are to address: "Who should pay for medical care?" Should it be the individual on his/her own? Should it be through employer sponsored plans? Should it be through public/private systems like the Affordable Care Act (ACA, otherwise called Obamacare) where the federal government sets the parameters for coverage but insurance companies or states actually provide the reimbursement? Should it be a single payer system where the federal government controls and finances treatment (universal healthcare or "Medicare for All")? Do you have a creative plan of your own?
In your ESSAY, answer the central question, AND THEN EXPLAIN WHERE THE REVENUE TO PAY FOR THE PLAN COMES FROM.
Keep these assumptions in mind:
· Average family income in the US is near $50,000.
· Inexpensive HMO family plan premium is around $1,000/month.
· Although governments do print money, government funded healthcare has to be paid for through taxation. If that's your choice, investigate tax rates in the countries that have it and predict how similar tax rates would affect us in the US.

This week you will, as a class, explicate Sylvia Plath's poem, "Lesbos," which is linked below. Also, read the "Poetry Explication" document linked there to.
After reading "Lesbos," each student should post an answer to one of the questions in the handout. Do not answer a question if another student has already answered it.
Attempt to go down the list of questions and respond, as though you were explicating the poem together. You may respond to someone else's answer after you have posted your own to an unanswered question in the Poetry Explication document.
To clarify, you are communally explicating the poem, using the handout to guide you. Your first post should be a response to an unanswered question in the handout. That means you need to read what other students before you have posted. Your second post and any additional posts may be a response to add onto or develop another student's idea, or you may simply answer another unanswered question that builds on another student's interpretation.
* In your essay, be sure to note which "Step" in the handout you are responding to!
Essay -3
3 PAGES
For your essay entry this week, read Elizabeth Alexander's inaugural poem, "Praise Song for the Day." Also, you may watch her read it at Obama's inauguration.
After you read/watch the poem, watch Alexander's interview with Stephen Colbert, also linked below the journal assignment.
Now think about what Alexander wanted to do with her poem - what do you think her purpose was? Do you think she was successful? What would you do differently?
You may consider comparing Alexander's attempt with Maya Angelou's poem at Clinton's inauguration (also linked below). Was Angelou's poem as effective as Alexander's? Or less so? What is the difference? How did the two women use their words to persuade or motivate the audience towards their poems' purposes? Keep in mind, these are very different poems - think about who they are addressing (who is the persona speaking to?) and why. On what level does each poet attempt to appeal?
You may certainly compare the two poems, though you are not required to do so. I do except you, at least, to respond to Alexander's poem, note what you liked about it, explain how well you think she used the gifts of poetic technique (metaphor? hyperbole? symbolism? etc) to achieve her goal, however you determine what that was. Also, identify who the persona is, who the audience she is speaking to is, what is the dramatic situation in the poem, etc.
REMEMBER: You are to write THREE pages (750 words minimum), typewritten in MLA format-- not just one paragraph or so.
