It is true that every new invention or any new idea will always have both pros and cons associated with it. Technology wise we are growing much faster and at the same time we are hitting into various consequences. I would like to share my experience in this scenario. Recently, I made a booking to reserve a property to rent on through a website. The booking is for couple of days. At the same time I had to purchase some gift cards especially to make the reservation and the gift cards that I have bought are applicable only to make reservation in this web site only not in any other sites. When I was trying to book the reservation, I had to add my cred card details too as the final price to pay is little more to that of the balance in my gift cards. I then added my credit card details and then continued to check out. The result was that the complete transaction is pulled from my credit card and not from my gift cards. Later on talking to the customer support folks I had to cancel the booking and then rebook it again by changing the options and then the result is the same. Finally, I had to remove my credit card details from my account and on purchasing a new gift card I booked through using all my gift cards.
The issue here is that,
First Issue:
On purchasing the gift cards that can be used only to book the reservations in this web site, the database is not immediately updated with the gift card information tied to our accounts.
Second Issues:
The other issue is that, even on selecting the payment method, by default the amount is pulled from the pre- added credit card.
Third Issue:
The final issue is that the customer service folks are having a hard time in updating the customer (who are on call) on the recent account changes and charges that are applied to the customers account.
Solution:
From my experiences, I can come up with the solutions at least that can reduce the customer difficulty in making the reservations in that website.
Solution for the First Issue:
There should be a separate database that holds the gift card details and that should be mapped to the customer account that purchases the gift cards. The catch her is that, the time taken to update the database is more than the expectation, when the traffic is more. Here the processes needs to be made ‘Steady State’ where even on the high traffic, the time taken to update the database should be the same to that when the traffic is less on this website.
Solution for the Second Issue:
The logic that is built on the code that pulls the complete transaction from the credit card if the amount on the gift cards is less should be updated. At least the customer should be given an option whether to continue with the complete charges on the credit card. I the logic change is not what they are not fine with, at least at the front end at the UI, a text should be highlighted on the transaction requirements.
Solution for the Third Issue:
The database to which the customer service is referring to should updated on every purchase order and not as a batch that reflect or pulls the purchase orders once in a day or twice in a day.
There are my suggestions on the issues that I have faced in recent times.
