FIVE PARAGRAPH ESSAY
Introduction (paragraph 1)
Hook—use the first three to five sentences to introduce the subject and gain the reader’s attention
Thesis—state clearly your point of view on the topic
- Essay Map (plan of development)—briefly list the three supporting ideas you will use to develop your essay
(NOTE: The thesis and essay map are always at the end of the intro paragraph.)
Support Body Paragraphs (paragraphs 2-4)
- Topic sentence—refer directly back to the corresponding point from the essay map
- Support—generally use 5-8 sentences to provide details, examples and explanations of your topic sentence
Transitions—use at the beginning of each support paragraph and within support paragraphs when changing subtopics (words like “First of all,” “For example,” and “Most importantly,”)
Conclusion (paragraph 5)
- Restate the subject (do not repeat word-for-word your thesis statement)
Summarize your supporting points (use different language than in the introductory paragraph)
Closing statement—emphasize your thesis with a closing statement that can be either a statement of emphasis, a recommendation, or a prediction.
DO NOT bring up any new points that were not discussed in the previous three support body paragraphs
Here is a recommended schedule for preparing an essay for DIRW0493: (considering the 1.5 hour time limit):
Prewriting/Outline: 15-20 minutes
Introduction: 10 minutes
Support paragraphs: 35 minutes
Conclusion: 5 minutes
Editing/Proofreading: 10-15 minutes
