Week 2
SOCIAL CHANGE PORTFOLIO: PART 1: SCOPE AND CONSEQUENCES
As you begin to develop your portfolio addressing a social change issue, you will have opportunities throughout the term to use the Discussion boards to share your progress with your colleagues. These forums allow your peers to provide consultative feedback to you, and for you to offer your perspective to them. For this Discussion and others in this course, you are asked to address specific points and to respond to your peers in specific ways. Your experience with these Discussions contributes to your understanding of consultation and to your skills as a practitioner.
RESOURCES
Be sure to review the Learning Resources before completing this activity. Click the weekly resources link to access the resources.
To Prepare:
· Review the Learning Resources for this week as they relate to scope and consequences of an identified problem in communities.
· Create a section in your Social Change Portfolio called “ Introduction,” and provide an introductory paragraph about your Social Change Portfolio.
· Create a section in your Social Change Portfolio called “ Scope and Consequences” and include the following information:
· The target problem you identified within your community. Select only one problem. This needs to be a public health/mental health problem aligning with your counseling scope of practice that can be addressed through prevention. For example, if you choose heroin overdoses in the community, as a school counselor, you would also focus on how this community challenge may impact the school or student population.
· Describe the scope of the problem, such as, the prevalence rates in your community, how those rates compare to national averages, and information about trends. Focus on local trends if available but if local data is not available, then describe national trends. For your project, trends refers to whether rates are increasing or decreasing or if there are other changes in the problem over time.
· Describe the consequences of this problem in your community including physical health consequences, mental health consequences, social/educational/family consequences, and economic consequences.
· Provide a one sentence goal statement for your Social Change Portfolio.
Week 3
SOCIAL CHANGE PORTFOLIO: PART 2: SOCIAL-ECOLOGICAL MODEL
For this week, you will examine the social-ecological model from the perspective of your Social Change Portfolio. You will consider how risk and protective factors are related to this model. Through this model, you can examine the relationships and complexity of a problem, and how the levels influence each other.

· Create a section in your Social Change Portfolio called “ Part 3: Theories of Prevention” and add an applicable theory(ies) and include the following:
· 1 or 2 theories that you can apply to a prevention program to address the target problem you identified in Week 2 and justify why this theory(ies) is/are appropriate for the problem and population you have identified. Please do not choose the social-ecological theory, as it was utilized in the previous section.
· Briefly summarize research support for the theory or theories you chose
· Identify an existing evidence-based program for this target problem. The “What Works” documents in the learning resources contain excellent examples to choose from.
Week 6
SOCIAL CHANGE PORTFOLIO: PART 4: DIVERSITY AND ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS
As you consider your community problem, is there a segment of the community that may be impacted more than others? Are there issues related to the diversity of this group, and does this raise ethical considerations?
For this Discussion, you will explore the challenges related to evidence-based and culturally relevant prevention as it applies to diverse populations within your targeted community problem. You also will uncover any ethical considerations you might need to further examine as it relates to the practice of prevention for your targeted problem.

· Conduct a literature review and/or a review of local public health data to identify a specific population (such as LGBT, ethnic minority, etc.) that is affected by the target problem in your community. Cite at least 2 peer-reviewed sources. For example, if your target problem is teenage substance abuse then your broad population is teens. Then, include the following:
· Identify a particular subgroup within that population (e.g., males, a specific ethnic minority group, etc.) that is impacted by this problem in a different way or at increased rates.
· Describe the unique impact or different rates of the problem among this group.

Week 7
SOCIAL CHANGE PORTFOLIO: PART 5: ADVOCACY
You have explored a community problem from the perspective of prevention. Now, you will consider this problem through the lens of advocacy. Are there public policies that could change? Are there resources that could be enlisted? As you address the community problem you have chosen to explore for your social change portfolio, consider how advocacy might, for example, raise awareness or resolve issues.
For this Discussion, you will explore advocacy actions as they relate to the targeted community problem you chose.

Counseling and Advocacy Interventions), identify one advocacy action to take to address the target problem at each of the following levels: institutional, community, and public policy levels and further explain why each of these actions might be effective.
Week 8- You can type something that I can read and record.
VIDEO PRESENTATION OF SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT PORTFOLIO
As noted in the introduction for this week, an important skill to have as a professional counselor is the skill of presenting information to a variety of audiences. Because this skill requires practice, receiving critical feedback from your colleagues is important as you become more aware of your skills.
For this Discussion, you will create a self-recorded video presentation of your Social Change Portfolio and post to this Discussion for further feedback from your colleagues. Please note that you should not try to present every detail or piece of information from your portfolio. The purpose of the video presentation is to concisely present the most important information from each tab of your portfolio.
RESOURCES
Be sure to review the Learning Resources before completing this activity. Click the weekly resources link to access the resources.
To Prepare:
· Review the required Learning Resources for this week and consider the best practices for providing effective feedback.
· Review the Kaltura Uploader link found in the navigation panel in the classroom for helpful guidelines for creating and uploading your video for this Discussion. ( Note: Please be mindful of the technical requirements needed when creating your video.)
· Create talking points (not a script) for your 5 minute-video according to the 5 tabs from your Social Change Project Portfolio including:
· Brief Introduction of your Social Change Portfolio
· Summary statement of the “ Scope and Consequences” of the problem in the community
· A brief statement of “ Social-ecological Model” including risk AND protective factors at the individual, peer, family, school, community/cultural levels

Using the Best Practices for Providing Feedback document found in the Learning Resources, respond to at least two colleagues’ video presentations considering some of the following. Note: Please look for colleagues who have not received many responses from other students so all students get feedback.
· Provide supportive feedback on both the content and verbal presentation skills
· Ask about a part of the video that you found unclear or needing clarification
· Make one suggestion about a way to strengthen the presentation
· Point out aspects of the presentation that are compelling
Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.
Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights that you have gained as a result of your colleagues’ comments.
Week 9
PRACTICING CONSULTEE-CENTERED CONSULTATION
This week, as you begin to provide consultee-centered consultation, note the learning resource’s guidance on working with a consultee to improve strengths while also tackling the core problem. The consultee-centered model places the emphasis on prevention.
This Discussion is more than an exchange among colleagues, it is an opportunity to apply your knowledge of consulting and practice your skills at it. For this Discussion, you will identify areas of your own portfolio that you feel could be strengthened. Then, you will engage in collaborative and empathic consultation to at least two of them.
As you, the students, move in the role of consultant, so will your instructor. Rather than individual responses to at least half of the students as in other discussions, your instructor will post general guidance to assist you in formulating your consultant response to your peers. You, the students, are responsible for the quality of interactions this week, just as you would be in a true consultant experience.
