Service Learning Component_MMS Outline

Goal: At the end of my presentation, the audience should be motivated to volunteer at

Step One: Research the Organization

1. Look over the descriptions of the Service Learning partners.

2. Choose an organization from the list of approved organizations.

3. Research the organization.

4. Contact the person listed for more information about the organization and opportunities for volunteers.

5. Study the website.

6. If possible, visit the organization, interview people who work there, or volunteer there.

Step Two: Organizing Your Presentation

1. Planning your advocacy presentation. What is the rhetorical situation?

2. Your goal is motivate undergraduate/graduate students to volunteer at this organization. Think about what motivates people to serve others.

3. How can you organize your presentation with a goal of service in mind?

4. Use the outline provided in this folder. MMS outline & Extemporaneous speaking delivery outline

5. What facts, stories, experiences, or other kinds of evidence do you need to share? What scriptures apply to this situation?

6. What needs does the organization have? What opportunities are there for volunteers? What do volunteers need to know?

7. What benefits are there for those who volunteer? What are the benefits to the organization?

8. You will need to present some basic information, but you main goal is to get people interested in volunteering there.

9. What will be the most persuasive approach? How will you establish credibility?

10. How will you start the presentation and close it? Think about the use of logos and pathos.

Step Three: Prepare a PowerPoint to Accompany your Presentation.

1. Prepare slides to accompany your presentation.

2. Study your text for tips on the preparation of effective visuals.

3. Study the website of the organization; your slides should blend with the style and colors used on it.

4. Practice presenting your advocacy speech with the slides.

5. Last, record your presentation on a second set of slides for a narrated version with notes that can be read by someone else.

The following items should be submitted:

1. An extra copy of your speech outline.

2. A hard copy of the slides. Also, email a copy of the slides to me on Blackboard.

Note: The next two items will be submitted by the next class session.

3. A personal reflection on your service-learning experience: What were your thoughts going into the assignment, after your research, and after you gave the presentation? What is your most powerful take-away? (3 pages)

4. An evaluation of your presentation from the video recording made in class using the form provided.
