MSED in Physical Education Leadership

PED 602 Research Project and Manuscript

Project

Topic selection: Determine a qualitative or quantitative research project that can be used to discover knowledge that may improve a school’s physical education program. You can build on a project that you have started in any other Physical Education Leadership course. Determine your specific purpose of your study and research questions.

Approval: Gain approval from the course instructor and any school personnel that may be involved in the project.

Review the literature: Begin a review of the literature or revise a previously written review.

Data collection: Determine the best instruments and methods for gathering data. Make arrangements with your participants to collect your data.

Data input and analysis: Input your data into the appropriate software, e.g. Excel, Word, etc. Analyze your qualitative or quantitative data in a process that will produce trustworthy results.

Write manuscript: Write the manuscript as you go along. The specifics are listed below.

Manuscript

The manuscript will be evaluated with the attached rubric, which clarifies the writing expectations. Writing should model the language and conventions in APA format. You may use the writing format presented in PED 611. Be sure to include the following sections:

Introduction: Introduce the reader to the topic by explaining the context within which the action research took place. Finish with a statement of the problem or research question.

Review of Literature: Your goal is to summarize the literature related to the research question, focusing on the most relevant studies. Expand upon ideas to extend the significance of the work beyond a re-statement of known ideas. Identify any gaps in current knowledge and significant directions or approaches that could fill these gaps. The review should lead the reader to your question/hypothesis.

Methods: Include the following sections.

Participants

Instruments

Procedures

Data Analysis

Results: Summarize the study results. Make sure to include any events, circumstances or data that contradict what you had hoped to do or find out. Relate the study’s results to the hypothesis.

Discussion: Summarize your results, and make any relevant implications for the physical education teachers, the physical education program, and/or the school. Suggest possible future research questions.

References: All references should be cited within the paper.

Knowledge of Pedagogical Theory

(NASPE 1A, CAEP 1b)

Ideas presented closely follow conventional concepts with little expansion and development of new directions. Ideas and concepts are generally and satisfactorily presented although lapses in logic are apparent. Theory is minimally applied to the context of the question.

Response is organized, carefully focused and clearly outlines the major points related to the question. Ideas are logically arranged to present a sound scholarly argument. Depth of understanding related to learning and teaching in physical education is evident and related to movement and pedagogy. Theory is accurately applied contextually to the question.

The paper excels in the organization and representation of ideas related to the question. Depth of understanding is apparent and clearly related to the teaching of physical education. The response synthesizes theoretical concepts related to learning and teaching in physical education and coherently applies them to the question’s specific context in movement and pedagogy.

Understanding of Educational Research and Policy

(Standard 1c)

The candidate includes a partial summary of the research and policy in physical education. The gaps in current knowledge and approaches that fill these gaps are not identified.

The candidate presents a credible summary of the research and policy in physical education. The gaps in current knowledge are identified and directions and approaches that fill these gaps are identified.

The candidate effectively summarizes important research and policy in physical education. Important issues or ideas from the research/policy are raised. The gaps in current knowledge of the field are clearly identified and logical suggestions for addressing these gaps are offered.

Analysis and Application of Theory and Research

(Standard 1b & 1c)

The candidate struggles to analyze and evaluate the research and theory in the field. The candidate has difficulty critiquing, synthesizing, and applying the research findings to learning and teaching in the area of certification.

The candidate provides an adequate analysis and evaluation of research and theory in the field. The candidate demonstrates ability to critique, synthesize, and apply some research findings and theory to learning and teaching in the area of certification.

The candidate presents a critical analysis and evaluation of research and theory in the field. The candidate is able to effectively critique, synthesize, and apply research findings and theory to the learning and teaching in the area of certification.

Style & Format

The APA style and format are broadly followed, but inconsistencies are apparent. There is selection of less suitable scientific sources (non-peer reviewed literature, web information). The style may be difficult to follow, detracting from the comprehensibility of the manuscript. Very few credible sources are listed in the reference list. Sources may be inaccurately written.

While there may be minor errors, conventions for APA style and format are used consistently throughout the manuscript. Documentation of sources is done thoroughly and competently. The reader would have little difficulty referring back to cited sources. Style and format contribute to the comprehensibility of the manuscript and suitably models our discipline's overall journalistic style. Credible sources are accurately written in the reference list.

The manuscript consistently models the

APA language and conventions used in the scholarly/professional literature appropriate to physical education. Original sources are clearly identified and correctly cited in both the body of the text and the reference section. The manuscript would meet the guidelines for submission for publication in a peer reviewed journal. An extensive number of credible sources are accurately written in the reference list.

Mechanics

Grammatical conventions are generally used, but inconsistency and/or errors in their use result in weak, but still apparent, connections between topics in the formulation of the argument. There is poor use of transitions to keep the reader on track within the topic.

While there may be minor errors, the manuscript follows normal conventions of spelling and grammar throughout. Errors do not significantly interfere with topic comprehensibility. Transitions are effectively used which help the reader move from one point to another.

The manuscript is essentially error free in terms of mechanics. Writing flows smoothly from one idea to another and leads the reader through an orderly discussion of the topic. Transitions effectively establish a sound scholarly argument and aid the reader in following the writer's logic.

The Knowledge of Pedagogical Theory section is designed to assess physical education professional knowledge, specifically NASPE Advanced Standard 1A: Knowledge of content in movement and pedagogy (NAPSE 2008 Advanced Physical Education Teacher Education Standards).

Each of the elements is designed to assess NCATE Unit Standard 1: Candidate Knowledge, Skills and Dispositions, with particular emphasis on Standard 1b: Knowledge and Application of Pedagogical Theory and Standard 1c: Understanding and Analysis of Educational Research and Policies.
