Briefings often deal with a problem facing the organization (society).

ISSUES FACING NORTH TEXAS

FACT: The population of North Texas is expected to double by 2050.

The general purpose of the briefing is to inform a chosen audience (members of an organization) about a problem or a change impacting the North Texas now or in the future.

Audience-Centered Communication

You are a member of the communication team in an organization in the North Texas area. The audience is composed of decision-makers. Some possible organizations might include:

Law enforcement City government A nonprofit working with _______

Communication industry Transportation service A church staff

Health care, hospital, Doctors or Business or Profession

Restaurants, food service Education, public or private Emergency Services

Homeowner Association Builders Others: _______________

Selecting the Topic (The Problem) and Determining the Key Messages

1. View the websites related to problems facing the North Texas region or one of the cities in particular.

2. Search the media for stories about happenings or changes that impact a large about of people in the region or a specific organization.

3. Select the issue/topic; determine the specific purpose (goal), and audience for the briefing you will develop for your chosen audience. Your biggest challenge is to narrow the topic to fit with your time of 7 minutes.

4. Research the issue; create a reference list of sources using APA; and determine what information will be most useful to this audience and to accomplish your specific purpose—to inform.

You will need a variety of sources to inform your decision-makers.

The audience of decision-makers needs the information presented in your briefing to examine a problem or a change in their environment.

6. Organize the briefing following guidelines provided. Your briefing will be 7 minutes. Prepare visuals to correspond with the guidelines for developing visual aids in the Speaker’s Guidebook and in the PDF of the RAND guidelines for briefings.

Presenting: Use a natural, conversational delivery style.

7. Prepare a working outline to rehearse. Practice the presentation with your visuals. Standing up and practicing out loud with your slides is the key to success.

8. Present to the class without using notes. This will require multiple rehearsals using your notes.

9. Submit the working outline, a hard copy of the slides, and the References.
