Design Proposal Presentation

Essentially a presentation is a different way to present data in support of an argument. For this assignment, you are required to work out how to talk about a research study in a presentation format. If you're having trouble working out the points to focus on from your research study, please review the list from the Research Study Analysis Practice.

The research study that you focus on for this assignment is chosen by you. You do not need to use a study from your Preliminary Bibliography, but if you choose to use a different study you need to get it approved by me via email at least 48 hours before the due date for the video. The essential argument for all the presentations is the same:

· Given a possible product/implementation X:

· There are several questions that are raised concerning the potential ways that human beings will interact with this product.

· A particularly pressing question to answer would be Y. Why is this question particularly important?

· Here is an accurate summarization of one research study related to question Y that (partially) answers this question. Follow the analysis structure that you learned doing the Research Study Analysis Practice and the Research Study Analysis Final Revision and Presentation assignments earlier this semester.

Do not present an argument for the connection to Kling for this presentation.

Do make sure that it's clear that there is a direct connection between the research findings from your chosen study and a way to make your proposed product more effective for the users.

Do make sure that your chosen research study is exploring user behavior with your proposed technology or the socio-cultural context of the proposed technology's use.

Each person will post a video to the Design Project Presentation Forum by 11:59 pm, Sunday, April 30th due date. After the videos are posted to the forum, individually, each student is required to watch at least four other students' videos and post questions for each project about:

· the nature of the question the student chose to try to answer,

· or the relationship of that question to the field of Social Informatics,

· or the specific work of the research study the student focused on for the presentation.

Questions posted to the discussion forum should be collected into a Word document and submitted to this assignment before 11:59 pm, Monday, May 1rst - no questions submitted after this point will be considered in the grading. Thoughtful connections to the course material and/or constructive comments on the presentation are especially valuable for this part of the project grade.

A few tips for creating your presentation:

· This is the Social Informatics course, so the question that you choose to focus on should clearly fit into Kling's definition of the field of Social Informatics. Please be sure to ask if you're not sure if you're hitting this criteria, I'd much rather meet with you to discuss how to make the video better than to have to grade work that's clearly not from the field of study the course is centered on.

· These presentations will be done online using videos. Ultimately, it doesn't matter which software tool you opt to use to create this video, so long as the material is clear and the focus remains on the content, not on the film-making. A screen capture tool such as Kaltura or Screencast-o-matic are both OK options, but I would use any tool that can output to .mp4.

· I'm not going to impose a specific time limit for these presentations since we're working online instead of in a class meeting. I would recommend that 8-10 minutes is a good time to aim for and should be ample for the purpose. Running very short or very long is a strong indication that you either haven't done a good job researching the question or you haven't decided what the best materials to present are.

· Please have a citation to the research study your presentation is focussing on cited in correct APA format in large type on the first slide of your presentation.

· You may need to cite sources other than the research study your presentation is focusing on to support your points. Please do these citations in APA format on slides that contain specific data points or quotes. (this can be in smaller type than the rest of the body text)

· Be sure to focus on the connection of the research to the potential product. Describe the product briefly where necessary to make that connection clear, but don't spend any more words on the marvels of the product than you need to make it clear how the research you've describing relates to it.

· Glitz isn't exactly the enemy of sound reasoning and fact in presentations, but it's not your friend either. Keep your presentation simple and consistent and be prepared to cut anything that doesn't move your points forward in a clear fashion.

Grading for this assignment is: based on the following:

· 20% (35/175 points) presentation design (including clarity of design, citations, spelling and grammar, etc.),

· 60% (105/175 points) the presentation's argument and evidence

· 20% (35/175 points) the questions you ask other students.

As always, please be sure to email me with questions and follow up for this assignment!
