nutrition project 2
Name: _______________________________ Grade: _________________
Part 1
· Complete the pre-assessment, where you write a paragraph about how you would evaluate your current diet. Be sure to give your current diet a grade, based on the pre-assessment instructions.
Part 2
· On the form provided, write down everything you eat and drink for one 24-hour day (put this on the “Day 1” sheet on page 3). Choose a normal day, one where you actually eat and drink something. Most people eat 10-20 foods or servings of foods (or more) per day.
· Once you have written the information on the form, look up the information for the food and beverages you have recorded. You will be recording kcalories, grams of carbohydrate, grams of fiber, grams of sugar, grams of protein, grams of fat, and milligrams of sodium. There are many places to find this information, including a phone app like MyFitnessPal, or you can go online to https://www.calorieking.com/us/en/ If you can’t find the exact same food you ate, find something that is fairly similar and use that instead.
· Total up all the columns and put the totals into the Comparison Table (page 7).
· Later, you will be repeating this for a second day (this will be later in the semester).
Part 3
· Use the Goal Sheet form to figure out how many kcalories, grams of carbohydrate, grams of protein and grams of fat you need. Grams of fiber, sugar, and milligrams of sodium you need per day are already figured, based on general recommendations for the United States population. You DO need to look these items up for the foods and beverages you recorded, however.
· Transfer this information onto the Comparison Table (page 7).
Part 4
· When assigned, write down everything you eat and drink for a second 24-hour day (put this on the “Day 2” sheet on page 6). As with Day 1, choose a normal day, one where you actually eat and drink something.
· As before, once you have written the information on the form, look up the information for the food and beverages you have recorded. You will be recording kcalories, grams of carbohydrate, grams of fiber, grams of sugar, grams of protein, grams of fat, and milligrams of sodium. Use the same database to find the information for Day 2. In other words, if you used a phone app like MyFitnessPal, use that again for Day 2. If you used https://www.calorieking.com/us/en/ then use that again for Day 2. As with Day 1, if you can’t find the exact same food you ate, find something that is fairly similar and use that instead.
· Transfer this information for Day 2 onto the Comparison Table on page 7. Once you do this, your Comparison Table should be complete, and you are ready to move on to the next part of the project.
Part 5
· Answer the questions about the evaluation of your diet. You will be using the information in the Comparison Table, and also information from both Day 1 and Day 2 log sheets, so make sure you have these completed before you start this part.
Part 6
· Answer the questions on the Post Assessment sheet, give your diet a final grade and compare with the first grade you gave yourself.
Your Diet Pre-Assessment
Part 1
Below, where you see the numbers 1-5, list 5 comments evaluating your current diet (the regular foods you have been eating lately) compared to what you think is a healthy diet. Consider these ideas as you put down your comments (5 points):
· Do you think you get the right amount of kcalories? (if you’re gaining or losing weight, you might be getting too many or too few kcalories. If your weight stays pretty much the same, you are probably getting the right amount of kcalories)
· Might you be getting too many processed foods? (you might list what these are and why you are eating them)
· Might you be getting too much sugar? Too little fiber? Does your diet include plenty of fruits and vegetables?
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
Once you have listed your 5 comments, give yourself a grade. Here is the grading rubric:
A—I feel I eat well at least 80% of the time.
B—I eat pretty well most of the time.
C—My diet is OK, but I could improve on some things.
D—I don’t pay much attention—my diet is probably not so good.
F—I eat “whatever,” and don’t give nutrition any thought. My diet is terrible.
Record your grade below:
I give my current diet a grade of: ___________
(1 point)
Part 2
Day 1 Log Sheet (10 points total)
· Be sure to list an amount in each of the 7 labeled vertical columns—Kcalories, Grams of carbohydrates, Grams of Fiber, Grams of Sugar, Grams of Protein, Grams of Fat, Milligrams of Sodium—for each food you eat, even if the number is 0. Go to https://www.calorieking.com/us/en/ for this information. For every spot missing in a column, on a row where you have written a food item, .5 points will be deducted.
· Be as honest as you can, and list everything you eat and drink (not water). You may fill up the whole page, or you may fill up only part of the page, depending on what you eat and drink on this day. Most people eat 10-20 foods and beverages, or servings of foods and beverages every day.

GOAL SHEET
Part 3
First, Do This:
1. Figure how many kcalories you need per day. Divide your weight in pounds by the number 2.2 to find your weight in kilograms. If you would like to maintain your weight, use your current weight. If you would like to gain or lose weight, use the weight you would like to get to. (2 points)
____________ divided by 2.2 = ________________
Weight in pounds Weight in kilograms
2. Take the number for your weight in kilograms, _____________ and multiply by just ONE of the following numbers to get an estimate of the kcalories you need per day. (2 points)
*If you are sedentary or get only very little activity, multiply your weight in kilograms by 25.
__________________ x 25 =
Weight in kilograms Kcalories needed per day
*If you are moderately active, with some light activity around the house or work, and not very intense exercise, multiply your weight in kilograms by 30.
__________________ x 30 =
Weight in kilograms Kcalories needed per day
*If you are very active, with some light or moderate activity around the house or work, and intense exercise for at least 30 minutes most days of the week, multiply your weight in kilograms by 35.
__________________ x 35 =
Weight in kilograms Kcalories needed per day
Second, Do This:
Now that you have figured out how many kcalories needed per day, you can figure out how many grams of carbohydrate, fat and protein you should have each day, following the directions below. Once you have figured the amount of grams of carbohydrate, fat and protein you need per day, record them in the Comparison Table on page 7 of this document.
From the “First, Do This” section, use the figure you found for kcalories needed per day, and fill in the blank below.
A) To find grams of carbohydrate :
_________________________ x .50 = _____________________________
Kcalories needed per day Kcalories from carbohydrate per day
(Continued on next page)
Then:
______________________________ divided by 4 =
KCALORIES from carbohydrate per day GRAMS of carbohydrate per day (2 points)
B) To find grams of protein :
_______________________ x .20 = ______________________________
Kcalories needed per day Kcalories from protein per day
Then:
_____________________________ divided by 4 =
KCALORIES from protein per day GRAMS of protein per day (2 points)
C) To find grams of fat:
______________________ x .30 = _______________________________
Kcalories needed per day Kcalories from fat per day
Then:
_____________________________ divided by 9 =
KCALORIES from fat per day GRAMS of fat per day (2 points)
Record the figure for GRAMS of carbohydrate per day, GRAMS of protein per day and GRAMS of fat per day in the Comparison Table on page 7 of this document.

Your Diet Post-Assessment Part 6
Now that you have recorded 2 days of your diet, one at the beginning of the semester and one later in the semester, look to see what, if any, changes that occurred between these 2 days. Also, look over the questions you completed, and the Comparison Table. Then, answer the following questions. (Each question in this part is worth 2 points)
1. Do you think you need more or fewer kcalories in your diet, (or is your diet perfect in this area?)
2. List at least 2 foods you could add or subtract to your diet to accomplish this (getting more or fewer kcalories.) If your diet seems like it is perfect in this area, then list at least 2 foods you will keep eating to continue having the perfect amount of kcalories.
3. Do you think you need more or fewer grams of carbohydrates in your diet, (or is your diet perfect in this area?)
4. List at least 2 foods you could add or subtract to your diet to accomplish this (getting more or fewer grams of carbohydrates.) If your diet seems like it is perfect in this area, list at least 2 foods you will keep eating to continue having the perfect amount of carbohydrate grams.
5. Do you think you need more or fewer grams of protein in your diet, (or is your diet perfect in this area?)
6. List at least 2 foods you could add or subtract to your diet to accomplish this (getting more or fewer grams of protein.) If your diet seems like it is perfect in this area, list at least 2 foods you will keep eating to continue having the perfect amount of grams of protein.
7. Do you think you need more or fewer grams of fiber in your diet, (or is your diet perfect in this area?)
8. List at least 2 foods you could add or subtract to your diet to accomplish this (getting more or fewer grams of fiber.) If your diet seems like it is perfect in this area, list at least 2 foods you will keep eating to continue having the perfect amount of fiber.
9. Most Americans consume more sugar than what is recommended. List 2 ways which may help Americans consume less sugar.
10. Most Americans get more sodium in their diets than what is recommended. List 2 ways which may help Americans reduce the amount of sodium in our diets.
Review
1. In 3-5 complete sentences, discuss what you found out about your diet by doing this project. (5 points)
6
