What Went Well
Today was my second DFC at Peaks Care Center in Longmont. What went well was that I was able to assist a resident who was not feeling well. I took their blood pressure manually, which is one of the skills I feel very confident doing. I also got to play bingo with the residents, which was really fun, and I had the opportunity to talk with more residents and hear some of their stories.
Today, our main focus was on the gastrointestinal and neurological systems. I was able to perform a neurological assessment on a resident, and I felt that it went very well. I also accompanied another student while they performed a neurological assessment, which gave me another opportunity to observe and learn.
Opportunities for Improvement
Similar to yesterday, I would have liked to have more opportunities to work directly with the nurse. However, working with the CNAs has been a great experience because they treat us very well and allow us to help with resident care.
Today, I also helped care for a resident who had fallen. We monitored her vital signs closely, and luckily, everything was okay. One area I want to improve is being able to think and respond quickly when an unexpected situation happens. Sometimes I worry that I may not respond fast enough, so I want to continue building my confidence and learning how to prioritize what needs to be done first.
Takeaway and Goal for Tomorrow
My biggest takeaway from today was how important it is to build relationships with the residents. Playing bingo, asking them questions, and listening to their stories helped me feel more connected to them. I think having a good relationship with your residents is a key part of providing good care and creating a positive environment.
My goal for tomorrow is to spend more time working with the nurse and hopefully have the opportunity to participate in medication administration under supervision. I would also love the opportunity to observe or assist with catheter care so I can continue developing my nursing skills and becoming more confident.
