What Went Well

Today was my first DFC at Peaks Care Center in Longmont. What went well was being able to take the residents’ vital signs and assist with bathing and other care. My favorite part was being able to talk with the residents because they have so many amazing stories to share.

Today our main focus was on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. I focused on one resident, Peter, who is a 70-year-old male who was admitted after having a stroke. I was able to help care for him, assist with his bath, take his vital signs, and monitor his blood pressure. This helped me understand why it is important to pay close attention to cardiovascular changes in our residents.

Opportunities for Improvement

I would like to have more opportunities to work directly with the nurse and practice more nursing skills. Today, I was able to help the CNA complete several tasks and also auscultated another resident’s lung sounds. The lung sounds were clear, which made me happy because I was able to recognize what normal sounds like. However, I would like to challenge myself by listening to different heart and lung sounds so I can become more confident identifying normal versus abnormal findings.

Takeaway and Goal for Tomorrow

My biggest takeaway from today is that every opportunity with a resident helps me become more comfortable with my nursing skills. My goal for tomorrow is to apply our next concept to one of my residents and complete a full head-to-toe assessment. I know I may still struggle with some parts, but I need the practice so I can improve my skills and feel less nervous. The more I practice, the more confident I know I will become.
