What went well:
This is my second week of clinicals, day five for PN126, and it has allowed me to continue expanding my nursing skills and confidence in the clinical setting. During this clinical experience, I felt more comfortable assisting my patient with both the cardiovascular and neurological assessments. I was able to practice listening carefully to heart sounds and observing neurological responses, which helped reinforce the assessment skills we have been learning in class.
I also appreciated that the nurses trusted me to perform blood glucose checks on patients. This experience helped me feel more involved in-patient care and allowed me to practice an important skill that I will continue to use throughout my nursing career. Additionally, I was able to ambulate patients safely in and out of the facility, which helped me understand the importance of mobility, safety, and fall prevention in patient care.
Opportunities for improvement:
This facility has been a great learning experience for me. However, I also noticed some areas that could be improvement. For example, when administering medications, it is very important to always follow the proper parameters and safety guidelines. Medication safety is critical, and ensuring that the correct checks are completed every time helps prevent errors and protects the patient. It is also important to always have the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) available at all times to maintain infection control and safety for both patients and staff.
Moving forward, I would also like to continue improving my ability to educate patients. I recognize that patient education is an important part of nursing care, and I would like to gain more experience in explaining medications, treatments, and health conditions so patients can better understand their care.
Take away:
I plan to elevate my nursing education by continuing to strengthen my knowledge of medications, medication safety protocols, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and correct injection sites. I will review these skills before my next clinical shift so that I can perform them safely and confidently when caring for patients. I also plan to ask questions, observe experienced nurses, and take every opportunity to practice hands-on skills during clinicals. I understand that the more effort and initiative I put into my learning, the more I will grow as a nursing student. My goal is to continue developing my clinical judgment, confidence, and competence so that I can become the best nurse possible and provide safe, high-quality care to my patients.
