What Went Well
Day two of PN136 went much better than the previous day. There were different nurses on the unit, and they were more willing to educate and involve us in patient care. I was able to pass medications, check glucose levels, and assist in feeding a resident who required help with meals. We also had the opportunity to observe a respiratory therapist perform suctioning. This was a great learning experience because the therapist explained the steps clearly and discussed what actions should be taken in case of an emergency. Overall, the day was very informative and helpful for my growth as a nursing student.
Opportunities for Improvement
One opportunity for improvement is communication between nurses and students. I know I may sound repetitive, but communication is essential for students to learn and succeed during clinical rotations. Since it was our last day at the facility, I felt that we were finally able to do more hands-on activities. However, it would have been beneficial if we had those opportunities earlier. It would also be helpful if students could provide feedback to the facility so they can improve the way they involve and support nursing students.
Takeaway
One of my biggest takeaways from this clinical experience was the activities we completed with our professor. I truly value the time and effort she puts into teaching us and reinforcing our skills. These activities helped refresh our knowledge and allowed us to practice important nursing skills in a supportive environment. They also made the learning process enjoyable. I will definitely miss this DFC experience, as it helped me grow and gain confidence in my abilities as a future nurse.
