Identify and describe at least two competing needs impacting your selected healthcare issue/stressor.
Excessive work overload and long working hours is a stressor that usually affects nurse practitioners. Nurse practitioners are regarded as advanced practice registered nurses who are entitled to provide specialized healthcare to patients. Therefore, they are medical professions with many responsibilities, such as prescribing medicine and treatment. In a healthcare setting, nurse practitioners may face work overload and long working hours that affect their performance in the field. The stressor can make nurse practitioners' health to deteriorate that is physical and mental. The need to deal with the stressor and implementation of staffing ratio should be increased per the hospital's number. They should also have enough resting hours, which will make the nurse practitioners fit even when working and providing services to the patients.
Most nurse practitioners face a lot of a hard time in the profession because they have fewer workers and are prone to many unhealthy issues. Nurses' ratio to the patient should increase so that fewer patients will have the nurse's proper attention, thus improving the health sector. Any person's mind is overworked, it tends to get tired, and even something gets out of control, which is a very serious case. Therefore, excessive work overload and long working hours should be discouraged in the health sectors; this will ensure that nurses are competent and can deliver high skills and make them explore the field wide.
Describe a relevant policy or practice in your organization that may influence your selected healthcare issue/stressor. (You didn’t answer the question)
The health care sector should develop practice such that nurse practitioners will be treated with a lot of care in their workplace and better payment per the hours their work. If any hospital ensures that the nurse is well looked after, the hospital's services will be of high standards compared to the past years. The practice should be put in place to ensure that both the employer and the employee are not affected by the scenario.
The health care practices, such as making sure that the worker's needs are well taken care of, make the workers boost their profession and make it possible for them to advance on their education. If the above-mentioned stressor is not taken care of, most nurse practitioners will lose hope in the field and look for an alternative (Clericetti et al., 2019). According to the world labor organization, every worker should work at a given hour and be given off after a certain working day. Through this, most workers can evaluate what they have done and plan for the next move. Off days and proper working hours are critical to healthcare workers in general.
Critique the policy for ethical considerations, and explain the policy’s strengths and challenges in promoting ethics.
If the policy is addressed correctly, the national and international standards will be met, making the nurse practitioners meet the standards. In the world of health care, if the policy is well worked at, it will ensure that the nurse practitioners' dignity is maintained and the scope. Most of the hospitals are have poor relations between the employer and the employee, thus making a lot of commotion in the sector hence poor service and lack of clients. The proper treatment makes the work output to increase and also the return to keep on increasing.
Strengths
More productivity and loyalty to the firm or hospital
It will result from the knowledge that the firm cares for their health and well being; they will be proud of their job and make sure that they do it to their level best possible. It also makes them work harder to meet the organizational goal, and another sets the short and long-term achievement of the firm (Bitton et al., 2017). Through this, most of them will not look for greener pastures but stay loyal to the firm.
It increases customer interaction and retention.
When the employees are happy, they tend to show it to customers and even share the love with them, thus making personal attachment with them. Most sick patients look for someone who will give them hope and reduce their anxiety. If a nurse is happy with the services given to him, even the customers will have a smooth life area.
Fewer sick days
Most of the workers and nurses will have less stress in their working field, thus improving health. They will be okay when working because they know they have someone who cares about them and about their work.
Challenges that will face the policy
Most employers will reject it.
Most of the employer are concern about the minimizing on the input and maximizing on the output. Most of them will be willing to lose their workers rather than increasing salaries.
Enacting the policy after it has been passed can take years before implementation.
Most of the land's best laws have not yet been implemented, and this makes policies even after been passed to stay for long before benefiting the workers. Most organizations establish policies that will be implemented over a long time, making the employees lose hope in the system (Greenberg, Docherty, Gnanapragasam, and Wessely, 2020). Suffering and pain are mostly experienced by the workers and even make most people hate the profession.
Recommend one or more policy or practice changes designed to balance the competing needs of resources, workers, and patients, while addressing any ethical shortcomings of the existing policies.
To ensure there is a balance when it comes to the competing needs of workers, patients, as well as resources, the change should be made on a certain policy. Therefore, I would recommend the following policies to be implemented;
The policy allowing uniformity in nurse practitioners practices
This policy will ensure that patients, as well as nurse practitioners, are exposed to equal resources and rights. Nurse practitioners will be able to access personal protective equipment, which will ensure that they provide various services appropriately. Additionally, uniformity should also be evident when it comes to providing patients with health services.
Patients should not be discriminated against based on their background when it comes to health services; for example, a patient can wait for long hours to get services while another patient uses their financial status to get the same service within minutes. Nurse practitioners can also be provided with leave if required; for example, I a nurse practitioner has worked for several years without rest, they should be allowed to ask for leave to rest. This policy will be able to ensure balance in the competing needs. The previous policy was based on corruption since nurse practitioners were not able to access the same resources.
Policy disallowing long working hours at the workplace
In some instances, nurse practitioners can have a lot of work overload, which can cause them to work for long hours. The policy will ensure that nurse practitioners work within the required hours so that they can rest. Additionally, more nurse practitioners should be employed to ensure that work is distributed equally; for example, a nurse practitioner can have a long line of patients who they may not attend to. In the previous policy, some nurse practitioners did not participate in their work as required, which causes others to have more work. This showed a lack of honesty.
