“Designers are practitioners, which means they are not trying to extend the knowledge base of science but instead, to apply the knowledge page 3”

Designers are trained to be more practical than theoretical; hence they are interested in something other than the scientific aspect. The designer is focused on creating a significant impact on what they do. However, scientists concentrate more on the finer details, such as comparing different theories to establish the truth. The use of science is time-consuming to a designer since results are expected to take little time in the practical aspect.

“Designers fall prey to the two ailments of not knowing what they don't know and, worse, thinking they know things they don't Page 4”

Designers need to be more fully knowledgeable; they assume they have sufficient skills; however, in reality, they do not have everything. They need to be fully aware of human behaviour: the cognitive sciences. They need to understand emotional and cognitive processes accompany human behaviour. Ignorance should be separate from the practical aspect of designers; they should try to understand how complex social and organizational problems are.

“Complex problems are complex systems: there is no simple solution. Page 4”

Designers should be informed there is no shortcut to solving a complex problem. The whole process must be followed, and a solution must be well thought out to bring out the desired result. Knowledge also plays an essential role in ensuring complex problems are well understood such that the solution sought is critically analyzed. More is needed for a designer to look for a simple way of solving something which is more complex and requires more attention.

“Science is difficult when applied to the physical and biological world. But when applied to people, the domain of the social sciences, it is especially difficult Page 5”

When applied to people, science becomes a problem because science only relates to some things. Designers are not informed of science-related issues and are not keen on understanding the scientific aspect of a designer. Science is a long process where the problem must be examined to come up with a solution. Science should be incorporated into the daily life of a designer.

“But beware: We must not lose the wonderful, delightful components of design Page 6”

As much as times are changing; we should preserve the main components of a designer, not everything should be changed. The artistic side of design plays a crucial role in displaying a designer's skills. Today's designers need to be better trained because they need to adjust to the current times and expectations. As much as more science needs to be included, the artistic side should not be forgotten.
