Building a physical model for Leubastche school case study
Introduction
Leubastche school case study
During the first few modules in the semester you identified, studied and illustrated a design strategy developed from a case study that will later become your main concept after a process of contextualization through site and program.
After better understanding the typology we will be working on through the semester, a school, and after taking a critical look at the challenges in education you are expected to implement the first step in the process of contextualization of your main design strategy. This week you will study ways in which your design strategy, extrapolated from your case study in the first few weeks of the semester, can be applied to an educational facility and provide a solution to the educational challenges we face today.
Through this assignment you will understand how quick, rough design iterations through model-making and drawing are a useful design tool for a project's early design stages. You will also develop different design iterations out of which one or two can be picked to continue the design process.
By the end of this module, you are expected to have started the process of turning your concept into a spatial system. The iterative design process that will follow in the next modules is intended to refine the generative set of architectural operations that will emerge out of this first approach to the building.
Assignment
The first approach to your design has two important implications:
· The first attempt to implement all the ideas and concepts you have been working on throughout the semester is expected to be inventive, radical, and creative—a fertile ground from which to work for the remainder of the studio. Practicalities can be solved later, but radicalism and relevance will be hard to find if it is not brought to your design from the very beginning.
· The first approach is supposed to be rough and schematic. At this early design stage, it is more useful to quickly iterate between different design scenarios than produce a unique, finalized architectural design. Therefore, you will be asked to quickly try different design solutions and present them all for discussion and analysis.
Deliverables
· 300 words explaining how your design strategy, extrapolated from your first weeks assignment, can be applied to an educational facility and its contribution to the current educational challenges.
· Draw a plan and a section that represent 3 different rough design schemes that allow your design strategy to make a contribution as part of an educational facility. (These drawings are expected to be drawings by hand)
· Make 1 conceptual model (3 models in total) per scheme and photograph them accordingly.
