THE DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY:

STEP # 1 Choose a Topic

Choose one of the following broad topics for your Description Essay and begin a topic discovery using one of the following methods: brainstorming, freewriting, listing, questioning.

1. A special day in your life

2. A person or place that made a great impression on you

3. A memorable vacation

4. Your pet

5. Your significant other

6. The first day of college

7. Your wedding day

8. A special memory

9. A secret place

10. A movie or TV episode

STEP #2 : Narrow your topic Remember, whichever topic you choose, it must be NARROWED down to a smaller, more specific topic before you go to the next steps

STEP # 3: Planning – decide what your dominant impression will be and then select at least two (2) senses you will employ; after that, make a list of adjectives you may use

STEP #4: Write your attention getter and preliminary thesis sentence; remember to include in the thesis the 3 main points you will address in your body paragraphs

STEP #5: Compose your outline on the Description Planning Form

STEP #6: Compose your first draft

STEP #7: Revise, then edit your draft

STEP #8: Finalize your draft
