Descriptive Analysis Paper

Purpose:

To describe and interpret the composition, context, and significance of a work of urban art.

Assignment:

Recently, we have related details and events from our past in order to explain something about ourselves to someone else (our readers). Since we are experts about ourselves and our readers are not, we brought to light something that they probably never would have noticed until they knew us for some time. For this next assignment, we will be doing much the same thing, only we will analyze details and characteristics of a work of urban art in order to explain its meaning and significance to our readers. Like with the previous essay, analysis requires intimate knowledge, so you will need to observe and describe carefully what you choose to write about. Craft your analysis in such a way that your readers gain insight into something hidden, something that they never would have noticed without your help.

Getting Started:

For this essay, select a work of urban art to observe and interpret. At first, just stop and observe all the minute sensory details (what do you feel, hear, see, smell, taste?) associated with the art itself, as well as the surrounding environment. Notice everything! Consider:

1) What sensory details are available to perception, both from the piece itself and the surrounding context/locale?

2) How do the details of the piece correspond to make meaning?

3) How does the piece gain additional meaning from its context?

4) Why is this piece being performed or displayed here? What purpose or moral or cultural value does the piece exemplify, particularly given its context?

5) Think of the people responsible for commissioning or creating the art: what were their purposes in displaying/performing the art in this particular locale, in front of these particular people?

Special Considerations:

· Carefully scrutinize the artwork, noting all the nuances of its composition. What images do you see represented?

· Think of how these images and nuances correspond – what meaning for the entire piece can you construct, and how does each individual aspect of the piece relate to this overall meaning?

· Look around you. Where is the piece located? What is this location like? What do you see, smell, hear, feel, or taste in this location?

· Now think about the relationship of the piece to the location – what does the one suggest about the other?

· Think about who commissioned the artwork, and who actually crafted it. Why did they place this piece of art precisely here? What were they trying to say by putting it here? What was their purpose in doing so?

· Taking place and piece together, what cultural value can you see exemplified or endorsed?

Requirements:

· 5 pages in length

· Times New Roman, 12-point font

· Doublespaced

· 1” margins all around

Assessment:

I’ll be looking for you to, somewhere, touch on the following interests:

· Description/Analysis of Piece – what do you see, smell, feel, taste, hear?

· Interpretation of Piece

· Description/Analysis of Context

· Correspondence of Context to Piece – how does place reinforce meaning of piece/performance?

· Moral/Cultural Value
