shows how to process descriptive statistics for categorical variables. You can watch the entire video

HERSCHEL KNAPP [continued]: Categorical variables such as gender, meal, or opinion can be

summarized using a small group of descriptive statistics and graphics. The n is the total number of

items contained in each category. This can also be expressed as a percentage. We can order a bar

chart or a pie chart,

HERSCHEL KNAPP [continued]: which provides an intuitive graph representing the numbers within

each category. [Descriptive Statistics, Categorical-- Test Run] This example uses the data set Ch 04--

Example 01-- Descriptive Statistics.sav. This data set contains two variables--

HERSCHEL KNAPP [continued]: gender, a categorical variable, and age, a continuous variable.

Below are the descriptive statistics for gender. Click Analyze, Descriptive Statistics, Frequencies.

Move Gender to the Variables window, and make sure Display frequency tables is checked.

HERSCHEL KNAPP [continued]: Click on Charts. Under Chart Type, select Bar charts. We could

choose to see the chart in terms of the frequencies-- the n for each category-- or percentages. We'll

use the default-- Frequencies. Click Continue. Click OK. And it processes.

summary statistics for gender-- 27 females and 23 males. These figures are also shown in

percentages. Finally we see the corresponding bar chart for gender.
