WRITING TO INFORM

(DESCRIPTION AND COMPARISON)

In the Comparison Part of the Essay, the student will write about the aspects of change observed in the film, His Girl Friday , in a story of its time before America’s entry into World War II almost eighty years ago. The area of change should be something observed in the film that can be discussed in a description/comparison essay. The comparison part of the essay should use the characteristic method.

The student should also speculate about the probable causes for the change. It is important that the reasons suggested are logical and linked with the results from the change.

Finally the student should determine whether the changes that has occurred has been for the better or for the worse.

The audience for this essay may be any group of readers that the student chooses that would benefit from this information.

The purpose of the paper is to inform the reader(s) about the specific aspects of change observed by the student. This will likely require some research to fully inform the reader about the past phenomenon creating the change. In addition to the comparison/contrast strategy used in the paper, the student will use some descriptive writing in trying to make the information as vivid and imaginative as possible. Organizing the Comparison/Contrast paper may take several forms. The method used in this essay will be the Characteristic Method. With this method the writer will discuss each characteristic and compare it to both the past and the present.

The length of the paper should be 6-8 paragraphs. At least three quotations IS A MUST in whole essay
