Do not wait Week 9 to begin, the paper it is design in the way you can begin even on week 1 to work on it

Academic sources of information Research requires us to use academic sources to explain our ideas and concepts to provide to the reader a better understanding of your research and findings. However, without references to support your point of view, your critical thinking and reflections will be bias therefore it is important to understand how to use and reference correctly.

 Be sure to use relevant sources or to the theories to support.  Use articles from credible and reliable sources. See our librarian if you need help.  Insert references correctly in the intext citation and bibliography.  Be sure to understand the context of your writing.  Do not use:

o Wikipedia. o TripAdvisor. o ANY BLOG. o Sources with no approved English translation. o Maximum 10 years old unless there are dictionaries or originals.

Extract highlighting grammatical errors and no supporting evidence:

The departments that influenced mainly Food and Beverage is mainly the kitchen as if the kitchen was late the whole team of the service would have to wait for the dishes …….

Although the author explains commonsense information, i.e., if the kitchen is not doing well the whole event will suffer, they have failed to make this statement reliable and formal. To do this you must use the work of other researchers to support a theory.

Example The departments that influenced mainly Food and Beverage is mainly the kitchen as if the kitchen was late the whole team of the service would have to wait for the dishes ……. This is supported by Black and White ( 2020) who argue that the kitchen is influential for the smooth operation of the F&B department.

Red : your statement Blue : Your supportive reference .

Academic Language

There are different methods and techniques that you can use to improve your writing to achieve better marks within your assignments. Formal writing is just one area in academic writing, and it is easier than you think! You don’t have to choose difficult or impressive words in sentences, you simply need to clearly express your ideas.

Tips : Avoid slang and contractions.

Look at these examples

Example 1

Not accepted

“According to X (2020) the marketing manager is responsible to be sure that the friends, crowds and various dudes join to the event to have fun and enjoy great time”

Accepted

“According to X (2020) the marketing manager is responsible to ensure that the concept of the event is promoted and delivered to a wide audience, is this instance the target group included University staff and students

Be mindful of the following rules:

 NEVER use the first person. I think …….. – Use “The author” or “The writer” when you are referring to yourself.

 When explaining figures or summaries of data, always use the academic format. Do not just place the image of the result on the paper, provide a simple explanation and reference if necessary.

 In case of slang or “Unusual terms” it is always better to provide an academic explanation to the term

The service team cosplay …... on the way to......- Incorrect format

Due to the nature of the event, the team decided to wear cloth which mimics........; this Entertainment techniques it known as Cosplay (Mr X, 2021) - Acceptable

 In case of listing items, actions. It recommended to avoid it. Try to paraphrase, in this way you can add extra sources to provide better reliability to your paper.

Example 2

This is the classical case where you would like to explain your department:

I think that we did a good job (1st) . My department was busy since day one (2nd) because I had (3rd) to struggle with hard task (4th / 5th )

1st – On the which base? Which data?

2nd - 3rd – How can you make it formal? How do you support your statement?

4th - How can affirm it?

5th – Source?

How can we rewrite it correctly?

1st - The author is confident that the tasks assigned to the department were done correctly due to the positive results on the questionnaire. - The questionnaire supports your statement.

2nd 3rd - In addition, the department provides a key function to the success of the event, this is evidenced by the importance of the role stated by Jensen (2020). You are supporting your statement

4th 5th – Due to what previously stated, it is understandable how such process required a considerable amount of research as stated by Ajani (2021). In this case, the researcher (you) use a source to support your idea

In conclusion, whenever you would like to express concepts or ideas use academic sources to support statements. Your own ideas and thinking will not be considered relevant without academic consistency.

(At this moment of your academic life you have no recognition to state even the obvious. So, this source aids you to state your ideas.)

Structure This is another important characteristic of academic writing structure is the way that you organise your work, for example the order that you write things in. You'll find information about the structure of a complete essay, as well as information about the structure of a paragraph in the student handbook. Flow is the way that your work reads, for example how well one paragraph leads on to the next.

.

Table of contents (can be left till after the paper is finished) This is presented at the beginning of the research paper after your title page . it needs to be tidy and clean and correctly formatted.

 Introduction 1  Main body 2

o Example 1 3 o Example 2 4 o Etc. Etc. 5

 Conclusion 7  Bibliography

o Reference list 10 o Appendix list 11

 Figure N.1 – Example 1 12  Figure N.2 – Example 2 13

Introduction The introduction serves to introduce the reader to what you are going to discuss. Think of the acronym ARMS -

A : states your aim or purpose of the study

R: introduces the research question

M: States your motivation for the study

S: Indicates the scope of the report

Main Body A number of paragraphs will create this section, you will analyse the various main points of discussion regarding (previously stated in the introduction) the aspects of your research.

You should provide an introduction within of each paragraph; for flow and consistency this should be linked to the previous paragraph. You need to be familiar with good connecting words to do this well.

NOTE : – At least two academic sources are recommended for each paragraph.

Conclusion It is the one of the most important parts. Here you summarize all the findings of your research. Nothing new is given here. ONLY in this segment you can express your personal feelings and emotion (Always in an academical format)

The conclusion recaps the project. It should be related to the introduction with an extra note regarding what was expected and what has been found . In this case you are preparing “Confirmation” research (it means that your goal it is co confirm what others has already discover).

Reference list This section it is divided into 2 sections: In-text citation and bibliography Here all the authors are listed in alphabetical order and by the correct format, if you are using the same author twice, place firstly the older one:

We use the Harvard referencing style . Please see Ms Gibson if you need to clarification or support.

Example 1

Reference list

Pellegrini. M (2020) etc. etc.

Pellegrini. M (2021) etc. etc.

Zibât. B (2015) etc. etc.

Appendices List

In this section you must list all the figures and additional material used as reference

Each separate appendix needs to be lettered: Appendix A, Appendix B, Appendix B1... The order they are presented in is dictated by the order they are mentioned in the text of the report (See Appendix A).

Note: A single line description will provide a better understanding of the data shown and avoid misinterpretation.

Example

Figure N.1 – This picture summarized the Etc. Etc.
