Suicide in Teens and Young Adults

Depression is a mental illness that is prevalent in today’s society. It is too often that we learn about a celebrity committing suicide or even someone we know. Social media plays a big role in teens and young adults life. Teens and young adults spend so much time online and not enough time creating real relationships that are crucial to happiness. Their lack of happiness leads to depression and ultimately suicide. Today’s teens and young adults face many challenges but one of their biggest is getting help for their problems. Many teens and young adults who commit suicide often reach out for help but the signs are not recognized and that is the problem.

I suffered from major depression in my early 20s, so that is why I chose this topic. I had attempted suicide and thankfully I was unsuccessful. I also have friends who attempted suicide and was successful. This topic is very close to my heart and having the help available to these people is very crucial. Recently Netflix had a new series called “13 Reasons Why”. This series is about a high school teenager who committed suicide and her reasons why. She reached out for help and no one knew how to recognize these signs. Knowing when a person is contemplating suicide is such an important act.
