Prioritization Assignment Rubric

Overview:

Nursing leadership and management includes the skill of delegation. As stated by ANA delegation is the transfer of responsibility for the performance of an activity from one individual to another while retaining accountability for the outcome. The RN uses critical thinking and professional judgement when following the Five Rights of Delegation: right task, right circumstances, right person, right direction/communication, and right supervision/evaluation.

Assignment:

For this assignment you will utilize the resources provided: a 10-bed nursing report sheet, a sample 10-bed nursing unit floor plan, a physician listing, and an abbreviation list. All these resources are available within Blackboard. This assignment will have two parts. Part one will be related to delegating assignments and tasks to staff; while, part two will be related to delegating specific nursing tasks. Utilizing the rubric below to guide you in completing this assignment.

Part One: Assignment of appropriate patient to the RN

You are the charge RN making staffing assignments. You have the following staff: one RN, one LVN, and one CNA. Which patients will you assign to the staff RN? Explain your rationale for each patient you assign to the staff RN. (NOTE: You also have a LVN to assign patients – see below. Each patient will either be assigned to the RN or the LVN)

Part Two: Assignment of appropriate patients to the LVN

You are the charge RN making staffing assignments. You have the following staff: one RN, one LVN, and one CNA. Which patients will you assign to the LVN? Explain your rationale for each patient you assign to the LVN. (NOTE: You also have a RN to assign patients – see above. Each patient will either be assigned to the RN or the LVN)

Part Three: Delegation of appropriate tasks to the CNA/UAP

You are the charge RN making staffing assignments. You have the following staff: one RN, one LVN, and one CNA. Which patient tasks you will assign to the CNA? You will need to assign at minimum 5 different task to the CNA. Each task will need to be different and from a different patient. Explain your rational for each task assigned.

Part Four:

Delegation of appropriate assignment to LVN

You are now the above staff RN which received the assigned patients from the charge RN. You have the luxury of having a dedicated LVN to help you with your patient assignment. Explain how you will utilize the LVN to assist you with your patient assignment. Using the Five Rights – delegate at minimum 4 specific task to the LVN. Explain the application of each the Five Rights to each task delegated.
