Definition Worksheet

1. Read pages 138-139 on supporting definitions using examples.  Then write a short description of a person (real or imagined) and use examples to convince your classmates that this person is either masculine or feminine or androgynous.  Think about whether you are using specific or iterative examples and whether you need to establish typicality for those examples.

2. Read pages 140-143 on modifying your subject to fit your evidence.  Then choose one of the following claims (or invent an claim about gender which uses an invisible all) and suggest a way to modify it to make it easier to support.  Then describe the kind of evidence you might use. *Men are more aggressive than women. *Women are more nurturing than men. *Men today take a greater role in caring for their children. *Teenagers today see gender as a spectrum.

3. Read pages 148-153 on strategies for definition.  Then use at least three tactics of definition to construct an extended definition for one of the following terms (or another term of your choice related to gender).  Feel free to research the terms online to get ideas. *masculine                *androgynous *macho                     *femme

*manly                      *womanly

*machista                 *butch *feminine                  *tomboy *metrosexual            *gender nonconforming
