Outcomes addressed in this activity:

Unit outcomes:

· Organize ideas for an upcoming writing project into a logical alphanumeric outline.

· Evaluate outlines written by others.

· Assess concepts related to plagiarism and academic misconduct.

Course outcome:

IT513-3: Develop academic research, idea organization, writing, and formatting standards for a professionally written outcome on an information technology topic.

Purpose:

Previously, you worked on writing research questions, prepared an annotated bibliography, and organized ideas about a technology topic into an outline. This week, you will take it one step further and write an informative (expository) paper.

Assignment Instructions

Although this task may seem intimidating, you have been preparing for it over the past few weeks. If you have not completed the Unit 6 Assignment yet, do so as soon as possible. You will need to use similar sources: three peer-reviewed journal articles and a web article, or two journal articles and two web articles.

Sources: Use the research question and sources from your annotated bibliography, keeping in mind any changes your instructor has indicated need to be made.

Format: You will use APA 7th edition for formatting and referencing to ensure a formal, professional presentation of ideas.

Before You Begin: Make sure you have read the Unit 8 Reading PDF and, if needed, review the APA 7th Edition Citation and Referencing and Citation and Referencing Takeaway PDFs. You may want to refer back to those documents during the proofreading process.

Requirements

Writing:

· Remember that this paper aims to inform the reader about a technology subject. It is not an opinion piece and is not meant to persuade, other than presenting facts.

· Your reading audience understands quite a bit about technology but is not an expert in your specific topic. This statement is provided so you understand the depth and kind of vocabulary that are appropriate to use.

· Make sure you review the reading PDF for organizational guidance regarding subheadings plus "synthesis" of ideas.

· Write a descriptive title for the paper (do not use the entire research question). You may reuse the title from your annotated bibliography.

· The body of the paper must be 800–1,000 words in length.

· The body includes the introduction, conclusion, and all content in between. The title page, abstract, and reference entries are not part of the body and are not included in the length requirements.

· Write completely in your own words; no quotes are allowed.

· Your work must be presented in essay/paragraph form, without lists, tables, code, or mathematical formulas, or images.

· Your writing must follow the rules for  formal writing.

· Use of AI for any part of this assignment is inappropriate and considered an academic violation.

Organization:

· An abstract is required. Check the reading for details.

· Your introductory paragraph must include your (single, strong, and open-ended) research question either as the first sentence or the last sentence of the paragraph.

· Avoid the use of "the hook." Simply provide facts.

· Avoid allowing the paper to refer to itself ("This paper will introduce," etc.) and instead be direct, as you have learned previously.

· Use first-level descriptive subheadings to show the paper's organization:

· Include at least three subheadings that are descriptive of your content. While you might consider the main ideas as shown in your outline, do not include any numbering/lettering, and do not actually include your outline in your document.

· 7th edition APA does not allow for  Introduction as a subheading, but  Conclusion is important to identify the final wrap-up of ideas.

· Titles and subheadings must be in title case (except in the header).

· Do not use second-level subheadings; this paper is not long enough to benefit from it.

· Use deductive paragraphing (main idea and then details).

· Do not include "transition" sentences.

Important: You are permitted to reuse some of the wording from the summaries you wrote for the annotated bibliography, with the following stipulations:

· Wording copied from your bibliography must be highlighted using Word's highlighting tool (Home ribbon, Font section).

· No more than 20% of the wording of your paper body can come directly from your bibliography.

· In-text citation must be applied to summarized and paraphrased content. Cite the original source, not yourself or your annotated bibliography.

· Failure to meet these stipulations will result in point loss.

Sources:

· Use all four sources at some point in the paper. All sources used must be cited within the body and included on the reference page. Do not list any sources without citations or cite sources that are not in the reference list. Remember that insufficient source attribution is a form of academic misconduct.

· You may include one additional source if you find that the original four did not contain all of the ideas you need, but do not add more than one new source.

· Any added source must be suitable for master's level work and readily available to your instructor for review.

· Use of more than five sources may result in point loss; always follow instructions carefully.

· If the appropriateness of a new source is in question, ask your instructor well before the deadline for pre-approval and guidance.

· Check the APA 7th Edition Citation and Referencing PDF for help if the source type is new to you.

Formatting:

· Create APA 7th edition formatting on your own, without the use of a template or a citation generator. Do not reuse papers as templates, even if you created them for an assignment earlier in this course. Include the following, and remember to input header content for a professional paper:

· Title page

· Abstract of 150–250 words (keywords not required)

· Body pages

· References (without the annotations from your bibliography)
