De-escalation Brandon Phillips Troy University Seminar in Law Enforcement CJ-6640-XTIA 24/T1 Professor: Dr. Lee 9/22/2024
ppt/slides/slide2.xml
What is de-escalation In law enforcement, it refers to techniques and strategies used by officers to reduce the intensity of a potentially volatile situation. The goal is to resolve conflicts peacefully and safely, minimizing the need for force. This can involve verbal communication, active listening, maintaining a calm demeanor, and using body language identification.
ppt/slides/slide3.xml
De-escalation approaches Person-centered approaches: Listen and focus your attention solely on the person. Non-judgmental approaches: Don’t say anything offenses to someone that would upset you if stated towards you. Here-and-now approaches: Focus on the present and not the past or future. Reduce anxiety and encourage meaningful communication

Effective Verbal De-escalation Safety needs always come first. Decrease the intensity of a situation. Use active listening to gain rapport and build trust. Set clear limits; communicate directly; create options. Promote appropriate resolutions based on an assessment of the facts.
ppt/slides/slide5.xml
De-escalation: Remove distractions, disruptive or upsetting influences Provide careful, clear expectations, and instructions Be aware of body language, be congruent Validate and accept Be aware that your uniform and tools on your belt may be intimidating Be consistent Use “I” statements Do not make promises you cannot keep
ppt/slides/slide6.xml
De-escalation techniques are abnormal. We are driven to freeze, fight or flee when scared. However, in de-escalation, we can do none of these. Reasoning with an enraged person is not possible. The first and most important objective is to reduce the level of arousal so that discussion becomes possible.

Effective Communication Rule Three important elements in any face-to-face encounter: Words Used (7%) Tone of Voice (38%) Body language (55%)
ppt/slides/slide8.xml
De-escalation: Determine the person’s need for basic needs, including food and water Be patient Be non-judgmental Use active listening skills LISTEN
