Even though efforts to restrict employees’ free speech at work may be permissible, such efforts raise troubling questions affecting individual rights.

I can understand Employer’s reasoning for wanting to restrict some topics at work, but others see this as a restriction of their freedom of speech which violates their rights.  Many feel that such topics such as religion and politics have no place in the workplace.  I have to admit that when I started working for a company in the south I was very shocked at how often religion comes up, even though I am aware that I am in the Bible belt.  I have come accustom to not discussing or bring up religion while at work because it is not the right environment to discuss this topic.  Politics can also be a very heated subject of debate and I can understand why it should not be a topic while in the workplace.  There is a lot of workplace violence today and sometimes a comment or argument can be the “last straw” for someone.  I am not saying that if everyone just discussed work topics that this would solely resolve workplace violence but I think it could play a part.  Current political issues are very highly debated and many people can’t even discuss it with family members without an argument so I can understand why it would be discouraged in the workplace.  I do feel that it is very normal for people to have conversations about their home life, spouses, children, pets etc. and I do not see this as a problem.

In short, I feel that we are at work to work and not discuss our personal beliefs or political affiliations.  I do not feel that it is unreasonable or a violation of rights, unless you work in politics or for a religious organization it shouldn’t be a topic of discussion during work hours.  I feel that it can cause tension and animosity between coworkers.  I am curious to hear if many people disagree with this and if so, is it solely due to a first amendment right?  Thanks!
