The neighborhood or the location in which a child lives can be a health disparity. Over 25% of children living in small rural communities and over 14 % of children in urban communities, live in poor housing conditions. Living in a home that is dilapidated increases the risk of poor health outcomes. A child’s well-being and health outcomes depend upon the parent or guardian and social determinants of health. Individuals living in poor, run-down housing are more likely to have limited education, lack of transportation, unemployed or low-paying job, lack of access to health care, live in a food desert, exposed to poor air quality, and have lack of access to fresh and healthy foods. Dilapidated living contributes to an increase in the risk of chronic diseases, low birth weight, obesity, asthma and lead poisoning in children.1 In Peoria county, the unemployment rate is 6.7% which is higher than both the state and national levels. Children under 18 years old living below the poverty level is 26%, again higher than both state and national levels. In Peoria County, 60% of eighth-graders qualify for the free lunch program.2 Living in poverty and poor housing conditions not only affect the child’s well-being and development but also the child’s mental health.3 This is due to higher stress levels, over-crowing in the home, living in a community with high crime rates, less sleep and limited access to healthy food.
From my experience, the location or community where a child resides is determined by the social determinants of health of the parent. The condition of housing throughout childhood can have lasting affects on health and mental health outcomes. Lack of education and unemployment are the two main inequalities that contribute to poor housing conditions. These factors go together and one or more disparities can affect the other and have the potential to lead to more, continuing to create a vicious circle. If a parent or guardian is unable to thrive in their community, how can we expect a child to thrive?
