For your initial post, choose one type of media professional (e.g., print journalists, television journalists, advertising professionals, public relations professionals, television and film writers, and direct mail marketers) and discuss expectations for their behavior within a profession. For example, what are the ethical expectations for a journalist? Is it the same ethical expectation as for a public relations professional?

In your response post, consider the posters chosen professional. In general, do you believe these media professionals behave ethically? Why is it important that they do and what happens when they do not behave ethically?

RESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING POST

1.There are codes of ethics and self-regulation established by media professionals such as print journalists.  Some consider these codes to be important while others only view they as an infringement on constitutional rights and as a hindrance to the conveyance of information. It is expected for journalists to avoid material that encourages crime or hate, especially against minorities. Unfortunately the tone which a lot of news articles are written in can do just that. The way that a news story is worded can greatly affect the way the information is perceived. This change in meaning can encourage hate against specific people groups.  (SKYLAR JONES)

2. Hello class,

For this discussion, I have chosen the job of White House Press Secretary. This job has very particular requirements that other communications jobs do not. It is the duty of the White House Press Secretary to address the media and lead press meetings in the absence of the President. This can be a particularly difficult job when there is trouble in the White House. General ethics rules do apply to this job, but it is the duty of the Press Secretary to satisfy the President. If the President wants their Press Secretary to act unethically or to lie to the press, then it is in that person's best interest that they do so. They could be asked to do this in the interest of  National Security or in the interest of the White House. This job has a lot of moments with unscripted speaking that could occur at very sensitive times. It is imperative that this individual is resolute in everything that is said during a press meeting. Though at times the Press Secretary will have a predetermined statement, the volley of questions that follow are unpredictable and the answers to these questions are fundamentally a reply from the office of the President. All this puts the White House Press Secretary in a unique position that does not compare to any other public relations position available.
