Early Conceptualization about Nursing Theory
As a profession, nursing practice is underpinned by theories and advances in nurse-driven research practices. Since the days of Florence Nightingale and other nursing philosophes and theorists, professional nursing practice has significantly benefited and relied on theories and conceptualization of the profession to guide and enhance its practice. One of the primary application of nursing theories is the development of knowledge and information. According to Matney, Avant, and Staggers (2015), nursing theories facilitate the development of nursing knowledge by providing principles that support its practice in addition to shaping mechanisms through which nurses can approach issues in the care setting and come up with solutions and interventions. As such, the conceptualization process can be seen as a platform through which nurses can engage in evidence-based research through which they can advance their practice while solving issues in the clinical setting.
Another application of the conceptualization of nursing theory is guiding the purpose and roles played by nurses in the care industry. Karnick (2014) positions that nursing theories provide nurses with an identity based on which that can help care managers, other healthcare professionals and patients recognize their unique contribution to healthcare service. The theories also help nurses understand their roles and how they can adequately utilize their education and training to ensure patients receive the highest level of care.
The conceptualization of nursing theory mainly points to nursing research and the process of creating and proving or reverting existing knowledge. As such, the topic relates to Essential III: Scholarship for Evidence-Based Practice. The essential requires nurses to develop their competencies in research, the consumption of research evidence and incorporating them into everyday practice.
