Date My Artist

A Guide to your writing assignment

Due date

Your assignment is due Tuesday April 3, by end of class

It should be printed out and stapled in the left hand corner (front and back printing is fine).

If you do not bring this paper to me on April 3 by end of class. I will not grade your paper and you will receive a ZERO.

Please feel free to turn it in early.

This information is non-negotiable.

Step 1: pick artist and get approval

If you have yet to pick an artist and email them to me for approval, you need to do that before you go any farther. So stop now and do that. Please.

Step 2: Your dating profile

Your assignment is to create a dating profile for your artist.

Please have fun with this!

But while you’re having fun you should be using legitimate information to write this dating profile.

What kind of information should I use?

Biographical information is going to be your biggest help!

Look in these types of sources:

Biography/Autobiography

Documentaries

Encyclopedia

Dictionary of Artists/Dictionary of Art

Scholarly articles

Other books/book chapters with biographical information.

You don’t have to use the whole book, if you only use one chapter, only cite one chapter.

YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO USE WEBSITES. I don’t care if it is a .com, .org, .net, .gov, if you use any websites you will have points deducted.

Please note that online journal articles are not the same thing as websites, and they are allowed.

How many sources? Formatting?

You are required to use the scholarly sources (5) you have already found for this assignment.

You must supply a work cited page with MLA formatting.

Do NOT use parenthetical citations in your actual writing, use footnotes or endnotes only.

If you do not know how to do these, please ask or consult the OWL at Purdue

Please use Times New Roman 12 point font for formatting your work cited page.

The rest of your profile the formatting can vary. Please do not use insane fonts, as they do get hard to read sometimes.

Headings are encouraged.

The actual profile

I am giving you full reign of what your actual profile looks like, however, there are certain things that are Mandatory for you to include.

It is also Mandatory that at the end of each section you give me a word count (simply highlight the section and look at your word count on your computer) and put it in parenthesis at the end.

Your overall word count should be between 1,000 and 1,250words. Please don’t go below or over these numbers.

Mandatory categories

About Me—This should be the meat of your writing. This is the part where you prove to me you did some legitimate research. Tell me about your artist. You may act as them, using personal pronouns to explain your life. See if you can’t take on their personality. Give me a summary of your life. Remember to highlight important things like where you were born, if you apprenticed with someone, if you worked for important people like kings or presidents, etc. Make it lively! Remember, you’re trying to get a date here.

Self Portrait: You should provide a self-portrait. Some of you will have to get creative. I do realize that there will be a few out there that do not have any actual Image their artist did of themselves, sometimes other people do paint their friends, so you might look there also. If it was painted by someone other than you, who was it? And what kind of a role did they play in your life? Give them a little credit. If you did it, tell me about that too.

Mandatory categories

Masterpiece: Your most important piece of art. Each of your artists are known for a masterpiece. You need to include something about the piece. Maybe you made it for a pope. Maybe it won you an award. Maybe it was the first painting you actually got paid for. Maybe it is the only one we have left. You need to include a short paragraph about how it changed your life or what it did for your life (even if you were dead when it happened!). Some of you will have more than one, you will have to pick which one fits best. Those of you who do artists in the 20th and 21st centuries might not have a “Masterpiece” but you will have an iconic piece that everyone knows.

Ideal Mate: This is the part where I want to see how well you can infer information. You should know a fair amount about your artist. The intimate details of their every move. Based on the personality and what you have learned about them, what kind of person would they be looking for in a mate? Who do you think will mesh well with your artist? Please have fun with this part! I just want to see if you can make a decent argument. There is no way for us to really truly know this answer. But give it your best shot.

Optional Categories (Pick 3)

Now, this wouldn’t be fun without some interesting tid bits of information. You must pick 3 of these things and find out about your artist. Please do not just pick 3 super easy ones, pick at least one that might take some explanation. Once you have picked your 3 categories, make sure you include them somewhere in your writing. They can have their own category or they can be worked in to your other writings. Please have fun with these too! They’re meant to make it more real! Remember that these artists were once your age, doing the things you do, think about that while you write the more personal parts of this assignments!

Optional categories (pick 3)

Political affiliation –did it impact anything in your artist’s life?

Zodiac—is your artist really a(n) [insert zodiac sign here]?

Family—Famous family members? Did your artist have a lot of brothers and sisters? Did your artist have a boat load of their own kids? Tell me about their family!

Additional hobbies—does your artist do anything other than their actual specialty?

Religion—Is your artist religious? What religion? Does it impact their art? How?

Sexual Preference—did your artist have feelings for others? How did they relate? Did this cause problems in your life? Did you have to keep things a secret?

Diseases—does your artist have a disease? Sexually transmitted or otherwise?

Travel Destinations—did your artist get to travel? Tell me about that. Was it school related? Did you like to holiday in the south of France?

Marital status—was your artist married? Divorced? Widowed? Player for life? Sexually repressed and never had any kind of companion?

Hang out Spots—Did your artist hang out anywhere famous? Cool? Were they a foodie or coffee snob?

Substance Abuse—Did your artist like to drink or do drugs? Frequently? What kind? Did that have any kind of effect on their art?

Unusual quirks—if you can find any of these, please include them, some of your artists like to eat paint. For real.
